A. EXPLAIN (10 The teacher will discuss the lesson

minutes) Science Concept:

The main producers like, plants, algae, certain protists and some prokaryotes
capture light enrgy fro the sun for their needs and to provide energy for
almost all life forms. These producers are considered as self-feeders or
authotrops because they produce their own food and sustain themselves
without consuming other organism in order to survive.
If we look at the hierarchy of food chain, we
can see that plants are in the bottom parts
which are considered as primary source of
food for all consumers like animals including
humans. If pants manufacture energy for
animals to use, they shoukd have a way to (The
recharge their nutrients. students
will
respond)
Photosyenthesis – is a process of food making done by plants and other
autotrophic organisms. The presence of chlorophyll enables these organism )
to make their own food. Autotrophic organism require light energy, carbon
dioxide (CO2), and water (H2O) to make food (sugar).

In plants, photosysnthesis primary takes place in

the leaves and little or none in stems depending
on the presence of chlorophyll.

The typical parts of the leaves

include the upper and the
lower epidermis, mesophyll
spongy layer, vacular bundles,
and stomata.

The upper epidermis, the

outermost layer which
secretes a waxy substance
called the cuticle. This cuticle
helps retain water inside the
leaf.
At the lower epidermis, you will see some openings. Each opening is called
stoma ( stomata). This is where carbon dioxide enters and oxygen passes out.

Around the stoma is a pair of beans-shaped cell is an epidermal cell with

chloroplast that regulates the opening and closing of the stomata.

Between the upper and the lower epidermis, you can see layers of the cells.
This is called mesophyll layer, which is coposes of palisade cells that are
arranged like colums and spongy cells which are loosely arranged cells. This
cells have organelles known as chloroplast that contains green pigments
which trap enrgy from the sun.

The chloroplast is enclosed by a double membrane namely an outer

membrane and an inner membrane.
Embedded in the stroma is a complex network of stacked sacs. Each stack is
called a granum (plural: grana). Each of those flattened sacs is called these
thylakoids that contains green-colored pigments called chlorophyll that
absorbs light.
Chlorophyl absorbs white light but it look green because white light consists
of three primary colors: red blue and green. Only red and blue light are
absorb thus making these colors unavailable to be seen by our eyes while the
green light is reflected which makes the chlorophyll looks green. However, it
is the energy from red light and blue light that are absorbed and will be used
in photosynthesis.

Two stages of the photosynthesis

Light- dependent reaction

Happens in the presence of lights.
It occurs in thylakoid membrane requires a continuous supply of light.
During this reaction light enrgy is absorbed by the chlorophyll and converted
into chemical energy.
Water one of the raw materials of photosynthesis is utilize during this stage
and facilitates the formation of free electrons and oxygen.
The energy harvested during this stage is stored in the for of ATP( Adenosine
Triphosphate) and NADPH (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide Phosphate
Hydrogen). Thes products will be needed in the next photosynthetic process.

Calvin cycle ( dark reaction)

Is a light independent phase that takes place in the stoma and converts
carbon dioxide ( CO2) into sugar.
This stage does not directly need ligt but needs the product of light reaction.
This is why it occurs immediately adter the light-dependent phase.

The chemical reaction for photosynthesis is:

ELABORATE (10 Activity No. 4: “ venn diagram’’
