ABSTRACT
The purpose of this project work is to diagnose the pupil’s inability to add six-
digit number numerals in basic eight of Gbi Kpemi High JHS. Out of the 40
pupils from the researcher’s class, twenty (20) of them consisting of thirteen (13)
boys and seven (7) girls could not add six digit number numerals correctly. To
arrest this problem the researcher used observation, interview and questionnaire
as action research instruments to collect his information of the problem. The
intervention strategies which include the use of place-value chart and abacus were
mounted to improve the ability of the pupils to add six digit number numerals. It
was found out from the study that the use of activity oriented approach in teaching
improved the performance of the pupils. It is highly recommended that
mathematics text books and teaching and learning materials should be supplied to
the schools in sufficient quantity, teacher should adopt the child-centered method
of teaching, parents should also show much concern in their wards education and
pupils must be encouraged and motivated to study at their leisure time.
