Candidates may use any calculator allowed by the regulations of the

Joint Council for Qualifications. Calculators must not have the facility
for symbolic algebra manipulation, differentiation and integration, or
have retrievable mathematical formulae stored in them.

Instructions
 Use black ink or ball-point pen.
 If pencil is used for diagrams/sketches/graphs it must be dark (HB or B).
Coloured pencils and highlighter pens must not be used.
 Fill in the boxes at the top of this page with your name,
centre number and candidate number.
 Answer all questions and ensure that your answers to parts of questions are
clearly labelled.
 Answer the questions in the spaces provided
– there may be more space than you need.
 You should show sufficient working to make your methods clear. Answers
without working may not gain full credit.
 When a calculator is used, the answer should be given to an appropriate
degree of accuracy.

Figure 1 shows a sketch of part of the curve with equation y = g(x), where

g(x) = |4e2x – 25|, x  ℝ.

The curve cuts the y-axis at the point A and meets the x-axis at the point B. The curve has an
asymptote y = k, where k is a constant, as shown in Figure 1.

9. The amount of an antibiotic in the bloodstream, from a given dose, is modelled by the
formula

where x is the amount of the antibiotic in the bloodstream in milligrams, D is the dose given
in milligrams and t is the time in hours after the antibiotic has been given.

A first dose of 15 mg of the antibiotic is given.

(a) Use the model to find the amount of the antibiotic in the bloodstream 4 hours after the
dose is given. Give your answer in mg to 3 decimal places.

A second dose of 15 mg is given 5 hours after the first dose has been given. Using the same
model for the second dose,

(b) show that the total amount of the antibiotic in the bloodstream 2 hours after the second
