SECTION - D
Q.29-Read the given passage and answer the questions that follows:
A large number of orbitals are possible in an atom. Qualitatively these orbitals can be distinguished by
their size, shape and orientation .An orbital of smaller size means there is more chance of finding the
electron near the nucleus. Similarly shape and orientation means that there is more possibility of finding
the electron along with the certain direction than along others . The principal quantum number
determines the size and to the large extent the energy of orbital. Azimuthal quantum number l, is also
known as orbital angular momentum it defines the three-dimensional shape of the orbital each shell
consist of one or more subshells or sub levels. The number of subshells in principal shell is equal to the
value of n. Magnetic orbital quantum number 𝑚𝑙 gives information about the spatial orientation of the
orbital with respect to a standard set of coordinate axis. The 4th quantum number is known as the electron
spin quantum number ms. An electron spins around its own axis much in a similar way as the earth spins
around its own axis while revolving around the sun
In these questions a statement of assertion followed by the statement of reason is given. Choose the
correct answer out of the following choices:
A-Assertion and Reason both are correct statement and Reason is the correct explanation for Assertion
B-Assertion and Reason both are correct statements and Reason is not the correct explanation of
For Assertion
C-Assertion is the correct statement but Reason is wrong statement
D-Assertion is the wrong statement but Reason is the correct statement
i)-Assertion: Each orbital is designated by three quantum numbers labeled as n, l and m
REASON: n is a positive integer with value of n is equals to 1,2,3.
ii)-Assertion: The principal quantum number identifies the shell
REASON: size of an orbital decreases with the increase of principal quantum number n.
iii)-Assertion: For n= 2 the possible value of l can be 0 and 1.
REASON : For a given value of n, l can have n values ranging from zero to n – 1
iv)-Assertion: spin quantum number Can take the values of +1/2 or -1/2.
REASON: Two spin states of the electrons and are normally represented by two arrows- spin up and
spin down
Q.30-Read the text carefully and answer the questions:
When anions and cations approach each other, the valence shell of anions are pulled towards the
cation nucleus and thus, the shape of the anion is deformed. The phenomenon of deformation of anion by
a cation is known as polarization and the ability of the cation to polarize the anion is called as polarizing
power of cation. Due to polarization, sharing of electrons occurs between two ions to some extent and the
bond shows some covalent character.
The magnitude of polarization depends upon a number of factors.
i)-Out of AlCl3 and AlI3 which halides show maximum polarization?
ii)-Out of AlCl3 and CaCl2 which one is more covalent in nature?
iii)-The non-aqueous solvent like ether is added to the mixture of LiCl, NaCl and KCl. Which will be
extracted into the ether?
