SHOWZAM

Showzam is Blackpool’s February

magic and variety Festival, now in
its 5th year, that features top
entertainment at various venues
throughout the town. I caught up
with it on Wednesday 15 February.

Dobson, Joe Pasquale they had on the public. Jon’s latest
recreation was Dr. Phantasma’s Ten
in One Show. In the show, to the
accompaniment of a lady
accordionist, various stages round
the tent were illuminated as
individual performers presented
their specialities. There was fire
eating, sword swallowing (two at a
time!) and the rubber man ... not
forgetting a live tarantula walking
over a scantily clad young lady!
My next visit was to Magique
Fantastique presented by Member
Romany. Many of you will know
Romany for her burlesque act or
recent appearance on the Penn and
Teller show but this was completely
different. Each performance had an
audience of only 21 as a mystery
unfolded about how the performer
lost her legs and now sits for ever
as a torso on a mahogany table.
Following his success last year,
Member Andrew Van Buren, with
assistants Allyson and Stephanie,
returned with a new production,
Temple of Illusions. He is a very
talented performer both with
magical and circus skills and is
clearly at the top of his profession.
It really was fast-moving and
faultless.
Showzam was well worth a visit
and it was a pleasure to see such a
variety of live entertainment.

arrange the discs. Locate the disc you peeked on top of the other

Stand Up Classics – Ian Keable MIMC audience on a journey as opposed to stepping them from one
trick to another.
Reported by Tim Barnes Rule Two was to make the second half stronger than the first –
Ian Keable drew the theme of his lecture from the middle
section of Funny Tricks, his currently touring one-man show. In
this he presented five pieces of magic, each based on a
classical principle of magic.
Principle number one was “sleeving”, illustrated with Cards
up the Sleeve. Here it became clear that the classic principles
were just those anticipated by the public, not necessarily those
actually used in executing the tricks! So, we watched the
presentation of the sleeving ‘classic’, albeit with no sleeving
involved, and were then walked through Ian’s routine. Next
came “concealing”, illustrated by the Stodare Egg. This piece,
however, did involve concealment, both of the silk and the
fresh egg! Then followed “the hand is quicker than the eye”,
as demonstrated with the Sidewalk Shuffle. Misdirection was
next with Ian’s presentation of Sympathetic Silks, based around
the routine by Paul Potassy. And finally more misdirection, with
Ian’s wonderful vanish of money, a watch, and a ring; with the
money returning to his wallet, his watch reappearing on his
wrist and the borrowed ring appearing, unusually, in a nest of
boxes.
Next followed Ian’s “Six Rules for One Man Shows”, all
supported by examples and giving the opportunity for multiple
plugs of his excellent book Magic Shows. Ian Keable

Common questions

Children's entertainers face challenges with adults expecting entertainers to hold open their availability without confirmed bookings. This scenario leads to complications when another client confirms a booking for the same date without a prior deposit from the first interested party. Frustrations arise from the misunderstanding of the booking process where entertainers require deposits to confirm engagements and manage their schedules effectively.

The collaboration between William Lane and Victor Peacock demonstrated effective cooperation by combining creative skills and practical execution within a tight timeframe. Lane constructed the material needed for illusions, while Peacock rehearsed and produced the sketch, ensuring a coalesced effort in mounting the magic act. Their teamwork allowed for fresh illusions and a polished performance, setting a model for post-war collaborations in The Circle's entertainments.

Douglas Craggs balanced his extensive duties by prioritizing his commitments and delegating responsibilities. Despite considerable government and societal demands, he fostered collaboration in entertaining and managing events, as seen in his withdrawal from the Secretary post due to increasing demands. By appointing capable successors and participating in crucial areas like the Council and policy committees, he ensured continuity and the flourishing of The Magic Circle.

Douglas Craggs played a critical role by using his authority to offer Hall guidance and influence that led to Hall winning an appeal against his notice to remain in uniform post-WWII. This allowed Hall to join his friend Richard Walker's firm as a Chartered Surveyor, maintaining his career trajectory. Craggs's support and advice were pivotal during Hall's appeal process against the War Office, demonstrating his significant influence and assistance.

The 'Slipped Disc' trick involves complaining about disturbed disc order, allowing cuts but not shuffles. A spectator freely chooses a starting disc, which appears to impact the stack's reassembly without genuinely affecting the outcome. The performer then places chosen discs on a spindle, ensuring fairness in choice. By following a predefined process, the trick concludes with a colorful finale, maintaining the illusion of spectator control.

Managing a magic magazine involved challenges like maintaining intellectual content, unique focus, and staying away from trivial or populist themes. These were addressed by incorporating intellectual and stimulating content, interviewing prominent figures in magic, and ensuring the magazine provided more than basic entertainment. The idea was to make it differentiated and meaningful for its elite readership, which included influential magic professionals.

The document suggests that for magic to evolve as a higher art form, it should shift its focus from mere displays of cleverness to incorporating meaningful content and emotional engagement. Magic should aim for intellectual stimulation and avoid cheap humor and stereotypes. By doing so, it can parallel the sophistication and depth seen in other recognized art forms, moving away from its current low art perception.

The Magic Circle maintained performance standards by establishing a Criticism Panel that operated confidentially. This panel would evaluate performances at Socials and issue a confidential report to the Council, with relevant feedback provided privately to performers. The initiative aimed to ensure that individual acts met the expected quality, safeguarding the Circle's reputation in public performances.

The criticism was that magic often cheapens itself by opting for low humor and lacking intellectual content or emotional depth. It was described as not allowing itself to flourish as a true art form, in contrast to what it could potentially achieve. Instead of being about something meaningful, magic was critiqued for focusing on showcasing cleverness without substantial content, putting it on par with 'low art.'

The formation of the National Association of Magical Societies (N.A.M.S.) marked a strategic reorganization, dissolving the previous Affiliation of Societies to make way for a new cooperative framework where The Magic Circle was an equal partner. This setup allowed for representation in decision-making and leadership through key positions like Presidency, supporting broader collaboration and influence within the magic community.
