Different Prehistoric Arts in the Philippines

In art history, prehistoric art is all art produced in preliterate, prehistoric cultures beginning
somewhere in very late geological history, and generally continuing or until that culture either
establishes writing or other record-keeping practices, or makes substantial contact with another
culture that has some record of major historical events.

● Painting
Several sites in the Philippines had uncovered ancient cave drawings. The Angono
Petroglyphs are a notable group, found in a shallow shelter of rock. It measures 63m long, 8m
deep, and a maximum height of 5m. During the Quaternary period these were formed in
volcanic soil. 127 sketches of animate and static shapes with circular or dome-like heads on
top.

● Calligraphy
The Philippines has numerous indigenous scripts that are commonly referred to as
suyat. The scripts were used with different mediums by different ethnolinguistic communities
in the Philippines prior to Spanish conquest in the 16 th century until the age of independence
in the 21st century. At the end of the colonialism only four suyat scripts have survived and
continue to be used in daily life by some communities.

● Sculpture
The religion of the Ifugao people is based on worship of the ancestor and veneration
of the spirits and gods of nature. The Rice Deities are especially revered. These bululs are
activated by ritual the bulul guardian figures believed to contain spirits capable of providing
abundant harvests, increasing yields of rice and protecting against disasters.

● Pottery
The art of pottery has long been part of different cultures in the Philippines, with
evidence pointing to a pottery culture dating from around 3,500 years ago. On the other hand,
pottery was first produced around 1,000 years ago, which led to what scholars call the
‘ceramic age’ in the Philippines.
