Beary History:
THE BEARYS
Spoken by more than 80% of the Muslim population along the Mangaluru-Udupi
coast and Manjeshwara in Kasargod, Kerala, this language has a history that spans
1200 years. They also known to have fought against the Portugal and British
Imperialism. For a language that has thrived for more than a millennium. While it
can be described as a mixture of Tulu, Kannada, Malayalam and even Arabic, its
grammatical structure follows Kannada and Tulu. Since the 1950s, the Beary
community has made its presence felt internationally, especially in the Gulf and
has more than 15 lakh Bearys around the world. The word ‘beary’ can be traced
back to the Tulu word ‘byara’ which means trade and transactions. They are
believed to be the descendents of ancient Arab traders and the indigenous
Tuluvas, also involved in trade and commerce. They are also mentioned in
traditional folk songs of Tulunadu, indicating that this Muslim community has
always had close & Friendly ties with the Tuluvas.
The Word 'BEARY' is said to be derived from the Tulu word 'BEARA', which means
trade or business. Since early times a majority of these people were involved in
business activities. the local Tuluvas called them as BEARYS. According to the
CENSUS of 1891, the UNDIVIDED DAKSHINA KANNADA had 90,345 Beary
Businessmen that was about; 97 per cent of total businessmen. Hence, they were
rightlyy referred to as BEAERYS or businessmen
About Bearys Chamber Of Commerce & Industry:
Today, hardly 20% of the community is engaged in trading and business, thanks to
the modern education community off late has been seeing professionally qualified
members. Though we are the community of entrepreneurs, bearys economic
status declined drastically.
The Bearys, who once enjoyed a high social status, slowly lost their position
during the British and Portuguese rule. Their opposition to the English resulted in
them being denied English education, which in course of time turned them into a
socially backward community.
Unity is strength! We strive to unite all businessmen under one roof so that we
join hands for the development of the community in the field of commerce and
industry. BCCI is an attempt to regain our economic status in the near future by
promoting innovative business ideas and assisting the members in commerce,
