reading from our lives. As a matter of fact, a lot of our day-to-day dealings with people and activities require57

Thankfully, there is a place where we could learn so much about reading, and it’s the academe.78
In the Philippines, the Department of Education (DepEd) makes sure that schools prioritize reading92
activities. Thus, our teachers always exert effort to help the Filipino learners read with understanding.107
However, our Filipino learners find it difficult to understand what they are reading. In fact, it was reported in126
the [Link], dated December 10, 2019, that our country performed poorly in an international test called142
Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). It was revealed in the test results that our Filipino158
learners performed poorly in reading comprehension and two other subject areas. As a response to this, 174
Education Secretary Leonor Briones stated that our education system needs to improve to address189
problems in reading.192
To do this, DepEd has undertaken steps to help the Filipino learners become good readers207
again. School leaders, teachers, parents, and individuals from the private sector are encouraged to work222
together to defeat this monstrous problem. Numerous projects are created out of this collaborative effort.237
This only means that if there is a learner who finds difficulty in reading, the education heroes will never stop257
in finding solutions to the numerous problems involving reading. They will never give up. They will give all275
