The Circulatory System
By Sarthak Khambete
What is the Circulatory
System?
The circulatory system is one of the
organ systems in the human body.
It includes the heart, the blood
vessels and the blood.
It is the system that carries oxygen
and nutrients to all the body parts.
The Heart
The heart is the organ in the circulatory
system that pumps blood to the other body
parts.
The right side pumps deoxygenated blood to
the lungs for oxygenation.
The left side pumps oxygenated blood to the
other organs in the body.
The pulmonary circuit carries deoxygenated
blood from the entire body to the right side of
the heart.
The systemic circuit carries oxygenated
blood from the lungs to the left side of the
heart, after which, it is pumped to the entire
body.
The Artery
The artery is a type of blood vessel
that sends blood under pressure from
the heart to the other organs in the
body.
It has thick walls to withstand the
pressure, and a small lumen (the tube
in a blood vessel through which blood
flows).
You can remember the artery and its
job by memorizing that ‘artery’ starts
with ‘A’, and ‘A’ stands for ‘away’.
Too much unhealthy food can thicken
artery walls, blocking blood flow, which
can lead to heart attack.
The Vein
The vein is a type of blood vessel
that carries deoxygenated blood to the
heart.
It has thin walls and a large lumen.
It often has valves to keep the blood
flowing and to prevent back-flow.
After the other organs extract oxygen
out of the blood, the vein carries it
back to the heart for oxygenation.
The Capillaries
Capillaries are tiny blood vessels that
connect arteries and veins.
Their walls are just one cell thick,
which is useful for exchanging
substances between cells and blood.
Diseases
High Blood Pressure - When your blood pressure is too high
(140/90 or higher).
Arrhythmia - When the heart beats too fast or too slow.
Hyperlipidemia - When there is too much cholesterol in your
blood.
Heart Failure - When the coronary artery is blocked and the
heart’s blood supply is low.
How to Have a Healthy Circulatory
System
Stay active.
Eat a healthy diet such as: fruit and vegetable.
Don’t eat too much salt or sugar.
Stay at a healthy weight.
Manage stress.
Sleep enough (8-10 hrs).
