Literature review: This paper examines Muslim-Christian dialogue through the lens of Nostra

Aetate, Laudato Si encyclical of Pope Francis, and the philosophy of Fethullah Gülen. It
highlights Gülen's advocacy for interfaith cooperation, inspired by Said Nursi, predating Nostra
Aetate. Gülen encouraged dialogue and the establishment of dialogue centers, despite criticism
and the lack of a formal religious hierarchy within Islam to foster widespread interfaith dialogue.
The text notes both the advancements made and the limitations of Nostra Aetate in promoting
institutionalized collaboration and addresses criticisms from both Muslim and Christian
perspectives. The analysis underscores the need to overcome historical grievances and covert
proselytism, advocating for joint projects and a more representative Muslim voice in interfaith
initiatives to achieve genuine and lasting understanding. Ultimately, the paper champions the
institutionalization of interfaith dialogue as a means of promoting peace and benefiting
humanity.

Challenges of Interfaith Dialogue Between Islam and Christianity

• Historical Baggage and Challenges to Interfaith Dialogue: Mistrust and skepticism persist in
East-West relations, shaped by historical interactions and unresolved grievances. Some Muslim
thinkers argue that past injustices and anti-Islamic policies must be acknowledged and
addressed before genuine dialogue can take place. Events such as the 9/11 attacks remain
deeply ingrained in the memories of both Muslims and Christians, influencing perceptions and
interfaith dynamics. Similarly, in Kenya, the 2013 Westgate attack continues to shape public
opinion, reinforcing misconceptions that associate Islam with violence. Such incidents, along
with other acts of terrorism and interreligious conflicts—such as those witnessed in Nigeria—
present significant obstacles to fostering interfaith cooperation. Many within Christian
communities, still affected by these events, struggle to engage in meaningful interfaith
collaboration. These challenges underscore the urgent need for sustained efforts in building
trust, promoting understanding, and addressing misconceptions at both institutional and
grassroots levels. Political Islamism poses a significant challenge to the future of interfaith
dialogue and collaboration, as it can either deepen tensions or create opportunities for
engagement. When politicized, religious ideologies may fuel division, distrust, and exclusion,
making dialogue difficult. However, if addressed constructively, interfaith collaboration can
provide a platform to engage with political Islamic movements, fostering mutual understanding
and reducing ideological conflicts.
