Air Pollution
measurement

RESEARCH
QUESTION
How does pollutant levels, including particulate
matter (PM2.5 and PM10), carbon monoxide (CO), and
nitrogen dioxide (NO2) change, location by location, in
an urban area, over the course of a day?
HYPOTHESIS
if air quality were measured in cities with high
levels of traffic as opposed to rural areas,
urban areas would represent higher levels of
pollutants such as PM2.5 and NO₂ from
vehicle emissions and industrial activities.
INDEPENDENT
VARIABLE
The independent variable, in an air quality measurement
iv
v
experiment, is something that you choose-man things like
i
location, time of day, or distance from pollution sources-you
manipulate to see its effect on air quality.
v
DEPENDENT
d VARIABLE
dv
In the air quality measurement experiment, the
dependent variables are the levels of pollutants
or indicators of air quality, including PM2.5,
PM10, or the Air Quality Index (AQI).
CONTROLLED
VARIABLES cv
Control variables for an experiment of air
v
quality measurement would include location,
time of day, equipment, weather conditions,
and duration of measurement in order to
ensure that the results are reliable.
MATERIALS
You will require an air quality monitoring device or sensors
capable of detecting PM2.5, CO2, or VOCs. Other consumables
that might be required include filter paper, an air pump for
sampling, and gas detection tubes for specific pollutants. The
environmental conditions could be measured with instruments
such as a thermometer, hygrometer, and data logger for
recording the results. Protection will also be needed, like masks.
Testable question
How does the level of particulate matter in
the air-Pm2.5-change at different times of
the day in an urban area?
Conclusion
The measurement experiment on air quality thus provided the
necessary information about the amount of impurities in the air.
Based on some indicative constituents-particulate matter, carbon
dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide-it was made clear how big human
activities and natural conditions can vary in affecting the quality of
the air. Results in this direction also underline that in this context,
monitoring but also mitigation measures concerning air pollution
are very crucial with regard to maintaining public health and a
healthy environment. The regular evaluation of air quality is very
important for awareness and effective policies toward clean air.
