Chamfering Techniques on Lathe

The document outlines three experiments focused on various lathe operations, including plain turning, taper turning, facing, chamfering, and additional operations like ball and curve turning. Each experiment specifies the aim, materials, required operations, tools, and a detailed procedure for performing the tasks on mild steel rods of specified dimensions. The results confirm that all operations were successfully completed to the required dimensions.

No: 1 Date:

Name:

Plain Turning, Taper Turning, Facing, Step Turning& Chamfering on Lathe

Aim:

To Perform Taper Turning, Facing, Grooving & Chamfering on Lathe on the given workpice.

Materials Required:

Mild Steel Rod 32 mm Diameter and 150 mm long.

Operations to be carried out:

Centering
Facing
Plain Turing
Chamfering
Step turning / Under Cut
Taper Turing
Finishing
Lubrication & Cleaning

Tools Required:

Vernier Calliper’s
Steel rule
Spanners
Chuck and tool Post key
HSS single point and HSS Parting Tool

Procedure:

The workpiece is fitted in to the chuck with sufficient overhang.

Adjust the machine to run the job to a required cutting speed.
Fix the cutting tool in the tool post and centering operation is performed so the axis of the job coincides
with the lathe axis.
Give the feed and depth of cut to the cutting tool.
Facing operation performed from the center of the job towards outwards or from the circumference
toward the center.
Plain turning operation is performed until the diameter of the workpiece reduce to required dimension.
Check the dimensions by using vernier calipers.
Again plain turning operation and undercutting operations is performed until the diameter of the work
piece reduced to required dimensions.
Then chamfering operations is done on the faced surface as per as the figure.
Using V – cutting tool step turning operation is performed according to the given dimensions and
finished the steps using parting tool.
Swivel the compound slide to the required angle and taper turning operation by rotating the compound
slide wheel.
The angle can be measured by using the formula

(𝐷−𝑑)
TAPER: 𝑻𝒂𝒏 𝜽 =
2𝑙

After completing taper turning operation plain Turing the remaining portion for the required dimension
Check the dimensions and finish the work.

Result:

The above mentioned operations successfully completed as per as the dimensions.
