What is AC Machine ?
AC machines are motors that convert ac electric energy to mechanical energy and generators that convert mechanical
energy to ac electric energy. The two major classes of ac machines are synchronous and induction machines. The field
current of synchronous machines (motors and generators) is supplied by a separate dc power source while the field
current of induction machines is supplied by magnetic induction (transformer action) into the field windings.
What is DC Machine ?
A DC machine is an electromechanical energy alteration device. The working principle of a DC machine is when electric
current flows through a coil within a magnetic field, and then the magnetic force generates a torque that rotates the
dc motor. The DC machines are classified into two types such as DC generator as well as DC motor.
Difference Between AC Machine and DC Machine
FEATURES AC MACHINE DC MACHINE
Commutator They do not require any commutator They need commutator to maintain
unidirectional flow of current in the machines.
Maintenance Generally lower as compared to DC machines Higher as compared to AC machines due to
presence of brushes and commutator.
Efficiency Higher efficiency for high speed machines Lower efficiency for high speed machines.
Starting Torque Lower, requiring additional starting Higher, making them suitable for applications
mechanisms needing high torque
Power Conversion Uses transformers for power conversion They need inverters for the same purpose.
Power Factor Power factor can be lagging or leading, Unity power factor, eliminating the need for
requiring correction equipment power factor correction
Advantages of AC Machines Disadvantages of AC Machines
•Efficient for high-speed applications. •They have a very complex speed control thus require
good amount of knowledge to handle.
•They have lower maintenance costs.
•They generally have higher initial cost.
•Better suited for long-distance power transmission.
•Because of there complex structure they have a lower
•Widely available and standardized. starting torque
Advantages of DC Machines Disadvantages of DC Machines
•Unlike AC Machines they have high starting torque. •As mentioned above the have higher maintenance due
to brushes and commutator.
•Simple speed control no need of complex steps like AC
Machines. •Lower efficiency at high speeds.
•Easier to design and build for small-scale applications. •Limited to shorter power transmission distances.
•Reliable operation with a stable power supply. •Voltage conversion requires additional equipment.
•Suitable for battery-powered and portable devices.
