The Third-Hand Smoke Mystery

One afternoon, Ella and Liam went to visit their cousin Jake. He had just moved into a new
apartment with his family. As they stepped inside, Ella wrinkled her nose. “Do you smell that?”
she asked.

Liam sniffed the air. “Yeah… it smells kind of like old cigarettes.”

Jake sighed. “That’s because the last person who lived here was a heavy smoker. Even though
they don’t live here anymore, the smell is still stuck in the walls, furniture, and even the
curtains.”

Ella’s eyes widened. “Wait, that’s a thing? I thought cigarette smoke just disappeared.”

Jake shook his head. “Nope. That’s called third-hand smoke. It’s the leftover chemicals from
cigarette smoke that stick to surfaces like walls, floors, and clothes. Even if no one is smoking
right now, it’s still there.”

Liam frowned. “So, it’s like an invisible danger?”

“Exactly,” Jake said. “And it’s just as bad as mainstream and side stream smoke because the
chemicals can still harm us, especially little kids and babies.”

Ella looked at the stained yellow wallpaper. “That’s so gross. So even if a smoker isn’t around,
the poison stays behind?”

“Yep,” Jake replied. “That’s why we have to clean everything really well before we move in.”

Liam shuddered. “I don’t want to touch anything here until it’s cleaned.”

Jake laughed. “Don’t worry, we’re scrubbing everything down this weekend.”

Ella thought for a moment. “It’s weird how the word ‘stream’ is in mainstream smoke and side
stream smoke, but there’s no ‘stream’ in third-hand smoke.”

Jake nodded. “That’s because mainstream and side stream smoke move in the air, like a river
stream. But third-hand smoke doesn’t move—it stays stuck on things.”

Ella shook her head. “That makes it even scarier! At least we can avoid cigarette streams, but
we can’t always see or smell third-hand smoke.”

Jake nodded. “That’s why the best thing to do is never smoke at all.”

As they left the apartment, Ella took a deep breath of fresh air. She had learned a lot about
different kinds of smoke, and she was more sure than ever—she would never follow the stream
of smoking.
