Deforestation is the process of removing trees and other plants from

an area of forest. This can occur for various reasons.

Agricultural expansion is one of the main causes of deforestation. As

the demand for food increases, more land is cleared to make way for
crops and animals raised for meat. In a similar way, a forest might be cut
down to make way for more houses or for improvements in infrastructure,
because the population in the area has risen quickly. An industry called
logging is another common cause of deforestation, as trees are cut down
for wood and other products. In addition to these human activities,
deforestation can also occur due to natural causes, such as diseases
which are spread by insects.

There is a dangerous circular process at work in some parts of the

world. On the one hand, deforestation contributes to global warming,
because trees take carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, out of the
atmosphere during the day. Their loss, therefore, leads to less CO, being
removed. Yet global warming is, itself, responsible for the loss of forests in
some areas, because rising temperatures and changing weather patterns
can increase the frequency of wildfires.

Deforestation can also lead to the loss of animals and plants. These
animals and plants may be beautiful or interesting, but what we lose is
much more important. According to the World Health Organization, of the
252 most important chemicals used in the treatment of illness, 11.1%
come from plants and 8.7% from animals. If we lose plants and animals
from the Earth, we may lose more chemicals which can fight disease.

Cities can be exciting places to live, but the infrastructure which

they require for safe and healthy living can be difficult to provide. These
problems can have both social and environmental impacts.

One of the main causes of problems in cities is too many people.

When people in rural areas cannot make a living from traditional jobs like
farming and fishing, for example, they often move to one of the country’s
nearest cities. A large number of new places to live are then required
quickly for all these people, and this often leads to new neighborhoods
which lack the basic infrastructure for healthy living. Too many people in a
small area can also lead to social issues, such as a rise in the number of
poor people, an increase in the crime rate, and a lack of local health care.

Another major cause of problems in cities is air pollution which

comes from cars and trucks in the streets, and factories inside the city,
often close to housing areas. This kind of pollution can cause health
problems, like difficulty in breathing. There is also another kind of pollution
in cities which is caused by the large number of people living in a small
area and shouting, arguing, playing loud music, and even laughing. If we
are not with the people making the noise, it can make us anxious or even
scared. It is now called noise pollution because, like bad air, it damages
the environment in which we live.

To fix these problems, cities need to be designed well in order not

to damage. The local environment and to provide a healthy place for
everyone to live in. This can include things like greener transportation,
more open spaces like parks, and energy for heating, cooling, and lighting
coming from the sun or the wind.
