4. Lab Exercise:
Open the file “[Link]” in Wireshark application and perform the
following exercises and record the observations with screenshots.

1. Filter the packets based on the following protocol and record your observations as
stated for each protocol also understand the significance of each protocol.
a. DNS
i. Identify the packets containing query at least for 2 domain names
ii. Identify the IP address of Source and Destination of the DNS packets
for the domain name you have chosen above.
iii. Identify the Flag values from the DNS packet for DNS query and
response message.
b. HTTP
i. Select HTTP protocol, identify HTTP version.
ii. Identify the value of the status code in the HTTP response message
and what does it signifies?
c. DHCP
i. Select DHCP packet and identify IP address of the DHCP sever.
ii. What is the “Your (client) IP address” in DHCP Discover, DHCP
Offer, DHCP Request and DHCP ACK packet.
d. SNMP
i. Identify SNMP protocol version.
ii. Select SNMP get-request and corresponding get-response message,
identify the values for var-binds and object name in each of the
message.
iii. Repeat the above for get-next-request and corresponding get-response
message.
2. Observe how the lower layer headers – transport, network and link layers – get added
to the application layer data before it finally goes out on the wire and understand their
significance.
