Section A
I. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:
The Magic of Venice
Venice, a city built on water, is a truly unique destination. Located in northeastern Italy,
it's not made up of streets in the traditional sense, but rather a network of canals, crossed
by hundreds of bridges. Gondolas, the iconic Venetian rowing boats, glide silently through
these waterways, offering an unforgettable way to experience the city. The Grand Canal, 5
the largest and most famous of these waterways, acts as the city's main thoroughfare, lined
with stunning Renaissance palaces and bustling markets.
Venice's history is as rich and fascinating as its architecture. Founded centuries ago, the city
grew into a powerful maritime republic, controlling trade routes across the Mediterranean.
This wealth is reflected in the magnificent buildings that adorn the city, from St. Mark's 10
Basilica, with its intricate mosaics and soaring domes, to the Doge's Palace, a masterpiece of
Venetian Gothic architecture. These landmarks are a testament to the city's past glory and a
reminder of its cultural significance.
Beyond the iconic gondolas and grand palaces, Venice offers a wealth of experiences for
visitors. Exploring the narrow, winding alleyways, discovering hidden squares, and 15
stumbling upon charming cafes are all part of the magic. The Rialto Market, a vibrant hub of
activity, offers a glimpse into local life, with vendors selling fresh seafood, local produce,
and handcrafted souvenirs. And, of course, no visit to Venice is complete without indulging
in the delicious local cuisine, from fresh pasta and seafood to the sweet treats known as
"cicchetti." 20
However, Venice faces many challenges. Rising sea levels and increasing tourism are
putting pressure on the city's fragile ecosystem and infrastructure. Efforts are being made to
preserve this unique city for future generations, balancing the needs of residents with the
desire to share its beauty with the world.

II. Find Synonyms and Antonyms:

Read the passage given below and find the synonyms and antonyms of the bold
words from within the passage itself.

The Friendly Fisherman

Unlike the lonely lighthouse keeper, who spent his days in solitude, the fisherman was a
sociable and outgoing man. He loved engaging with people, sharing stories, and working
alongside others in the bustling harbour. Though life at sea required careful planning, he
was not as frugal as the keeper. Instead, he was known for being extravagant, often
spending generously on food and supplies to ensure his family’s comfort. However, when
necessary, he could also be thrifty, making wise financial decisions when resources were
scarce.

The fisherman was not just hardworking but also smart in his trade. His resourceful and
quick-thinking nature allowed him to find fish even in the most unpredictable waters. His
apprentice, however, was not as intelligent, often making foolish decisions that led to empty
nets and wasted time. Sometimes, the fisherman had to correct his mistakes, teaching him to
be more observant.
Unlike the generous lighthouse keeper, the fisherman was sometimes selfish, keeping the
best fish for his own family before selling the rest. That said, there were moments when he
was truly giving, offering a portion of his catch to those in need. He was also wary of a
sneaky trader at the market, who often tried to cheat customers by weighing fish incorrectly.
The sly trader pretended to offer a fair price, but he secretly adjusted the scale to trick
buyers.

Years of experience had made the honest fisherman a wise and knowledgeable man,
understanding the tides and seasons with precision. But unlike the cautious lighthouse
keeper, he was often reckless, taking risks even when storms threatened to make the journey
dangerous. Yet, in unpredictable situations, his careful and watchful side would emerge,
ensuring he made safe decisions when absolutely necessary.

One evening, as he sailed towards the shore, he passed a deserted stretch of beach where
old boats lay abandoned. He often wondered about the fishermen who once worked there—
had they left for better opportunities, or had they been too unintelligent to adapt to the ever-
changing sea? As he continued his journey, he reached the crowded harbour, where
fishermen hurriedly unloaded their catch, merchants shouted their prices, and children ask
through the busy market stalls.

Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam’s words of Inspiration

One day, while addressing a group of students, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam was asked, “Sir,
what is the key to success?”

Dr. Kalam smiled and replied, “Dream big, work hard, and never give up. Your dreams
will only come true if you are willing to put in the effort.”

A student then asked, “But what if we face failure?”

Dr. Kalam nodded and said, “Failure is not the opposite of success; it is a stepping stone.
Learn from it, improve, and move forward. Only those who persevere can achieve
greatness.”
