Safety is a cheap and effective insurance policy.
Rule of the month- March 2025

(1) A railway servant noticing a fire, likely to result in loss of life or cause damage to
property, shall take all possible steps to save life and property, to prevent it from spreading
and to extinguish it.
(2) In case the fire is on or adjacent to any electrical equipment, the railway servant shall, if
he is competent in handling electrical equipment and specially trained for the purpose, have
the affected part immediately isolated from its source of supply of electrical energy.
(3) The occurrence of a fire shall, in every case, be reported to the nearest Station Master by
the most expeditious means and the Station Master shall take such action as may be
prescribed by special instructions.
S.R. 6.10/1. Fire in trains:- (i) In case of a fire occurring in a passenger train the safety of the
passengers shall first be attended to, should a postal van be discovered to be on fire, every
effort shall be made to save the Government Mails.
(ii) Should a fire be discovered in a running train, the LP shall at once bring the train to stand,
and the vehicles behind the one on fire detached; the front portion of the train shall then be
moved forward, so as to prevent the possibility of other vehicle in rear igniting. As soon as the
front portion of the train has moved a sufficient distance forward to achieve the object aimed
at, the burning vehicle shall be detached and those in front of it shall also be moved onward to
a safe distance. Every effort shall then be made to extinguish the fire and to save the contents
of the vehicle; but if such efforts are unavailing, the fire shall be allowed to burn itself out. In
such event the front portion of the train may be taken to the next station and information given
to the SM/SS and the Control of the occurrence for making necessary arrangement for removal
of the burnt out vehicle as well as the rear portion of the train from the Block section.
(iii) After isolating the vehicle detailed in Para (ii) of this rule if the engine can be brought near
enough, steam and water from the injector must be turned on to the flames and water from
the tender must be freely used to extinguish fire. Should it be known that water is procurable
within a short distance from the place where the fire is discovered and it is considered safe to
run the vehicle up to that spot, it may be so run. The TM and the LP of the train must exercise
their discretion and judgment in such cases.

TM in-charge of the train shall put off the main switch on carriage, electrically isolate the
carriage from rest of the train by disconnecting ‘slip’ coupler at the ends and shall then remove
the battery fuses and dynamo fuses and take all possible steps to extinguish fire and prevent it
from spreading and report the occurrence to the nearest SM/SS, nearest electrical staff and
also to the controller on duty on Controlled section. If not protected by fixed signals the train
should be protected in accordance with G.R 6.03. and S.Rs. thereto.
In case of a generating vehicle, the carriage shall be detached from the train if possible. In case
it is not possible for any reason to detach the carriage the belting should be taken off by
removing the belt fastener. The dynamo belt and fuses as well as the battery fuses remove
must not be provided on the dynamo and battery again until such time the carriage can be
detached and examined by electrical staff. The belting removed should be handed over to the
electrical staffs who examine the carriage.

charge of the train in performing the above duties.

electrician.
