BOOK-MATE

Introduction:

The BOOK-MATE project seeks to transform book transportation in academic

environments by empowering students that designed to help co-students and staff in
managing heavy books efficiently. This robot not only minimizes physical strain and
saves time but also incorporates advanced tracking technology and promotes
sustainability by using recyclable materials. Featuring a durable container for books,
motorized movement, and a simple navigation system, BOOK-MATE offers a
seamless and environmentally conscious solution for book transportation.

Enhanced Functionality:

BOOK-MATE includes a QR code scanning system to show books and figure out
their location within the library system. If the book belongs to the library, the robot
delivers it to the proper section. If the book does not belong to the library, it directs
the book to a designated storage compartment for non-library items.
Features

Interface for QR Code Scanning:

The robot features a built-in screen that activates upon scanning a QR code, providing detailed
information about the book or item.

Book Storage Compartment:

♦ A sturdy, secure container to hold multiple books during transport.

♦ Separate compartments for library books and non-library items.

Motorized Movement:

• A simple motor system for forward, backward, and turning motion.

QR Code Scanning System:

Locating Books:

• QR codes scanned to identify a book’s location within the library.

• Directs the robot to deliver the book to its appropriate section.

Non-Library Books:

• Identifies books not registered in the library system.

• Routes these books to a designated compartment for non-library items.

Improved QR Code Scanning Research

• Analyze how QR code data is structured and ways to optimize decoding speed with
basic hardware.
• Explore the feasibility of integrating an inexpensive camera module with onboard
processing.
Additions:

• Camera Module: Use a low-cost camera module like the Raspberry Pi Camera or ESP32-
CAM for QR scanning instead of relying on old smartphones.
• Database Integration: Create a lightweight database (e.g., SQLite) to store book details
and QR codes for faster book identification.
• AI Integration: Incorporate basic Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to read text labels
on books if QR codes are missing.

Recyclable Design:

• QR labels printed on recyclable paper or reused materials.

• Scanner housing made from cardboard or repurposed plastic.

Navigation System

• Use of infrared sensors to successfully navigate the library.

Feasible Approach:
• Infrared Sensors: Use simple infrared sensors to detect obstacles and basic pathways.
• Line-Following System: Implement a line-following mechanism with black tape paths on
the floor for navigation.
• Pre-Programmed Routes: Instead of dynamic mapping, configure the robot with fixed
routes for common destinations within the library.

Research:

Investigate low-cost and efficient navigation technologies like LIDAR (light detection and
ranging) or ultrasonic sensors for precise obstacle detection and path planning.
Obstacle Avoidance: Add a combination of infrared and ultrasonic sensors to enhance the
navigation system, avoiding collisions with people or objects.

Power Efficiency:

• Powered by batteries for sustainable energy use.

• Rechargeable Batteries: Use lithium-ion batteries for automated recharging.
• Power Management System: Implement a microcontroller-based system to manage

energy usage and switch off non-essential functions during idle times.

Expanded Functionality Research:

• Review advanced features in commercial delivery robots for inspiration.

• Study RFID systems for book tracking.

Battery Indicator:

• Displays the current battery level to ensure uninterrupted operation.

• Provides alerts when the battery is low and requires recharging.

List of Recyclable Materials

Container for Books:

• Cardboard boxes, plastic crates, or old storage bins.

Materials for Wheels:

• Recyclable materials for wheels, axles, and chassis.

• Bottle caps, CDs, or toy car wheels.

Motors:

• Extracted from old toys or small electronic devices.

Power Source:

• Batteries from old gadgets or small solar panels from calculators.

Chassis/Base:

• Plywood scraps, old baking trays, or repurposed metal sheets.

Axle System:

• Skewers, straws, or rods from broken furniture.

QR Code System Components:

• QR code scanner from old barcode readers or smartphones.

• Labels printed on recyclable paper for QR code stickers.
