PHYS3420: EM1, Tutorial #2

SUBMIT SOLUTIONS TO Q2 and Q4 by 20th November, 2023.

1. 
A wave is described by E  8.0  103 cos 200  106 t   z xˆ  V / m in free space.

Find
(i) The direction in which the wave is travelling
(ii) B and H
(iii) β
(iv) Show that E and H are mutually perpendicular
(v) Find the average power density of the wave.

2. A magnetic field propagating in free space is given by

 
H  z, t   20 sin   108 t   z ˆa x A / m . Find the

(a) frequency, f, phase constant or wave number , β, wavelength, λ, and the

electric field E  z, t  .

(b) The average power density of the wave

3. The excess charge in a certain medium decreases to one third of its initial value in
20 s. If the conductivity of the medium is 10-4 S/m, what is the dielectric constant
of the medium? What is the relaxation time? After 30 s, what fraction of the charge
will remain?

4. Lightning strikes a dielectric, spherical in shape, with radius 20 mm for which

εr = 3.1, σ = 6 × 10-5 (m)-1 and deposits uniformly a charge of 7.5 C

Determine
(i) the initial charge density
(ii) the relaxation time
(iii) the charge density after 5 s
