Exception: if no one else is in your program.
When: Meeting in class 7; presentation in classes 11 and 12

Phase 1: Outline and meeting (class 7; 5%)
Each group will meet with me shortly in class 7 to present a detailed outline and
bibliography (in APA format) for the oral presentation.
A. Outline
The outline should generally look like this:
Background on the subject (brief)
Main idea
o Support
Proof / explanation
o Support

o (etc.)
Last page: References, in APA format
o All sources of information must be documented, including classes
with their dates and topics. This is covered in class 4. See the
example on Moodle.
See the example on Javanese gamelan on Moodle, in class 4, for an example of
an outline.
B. Meeting in class 7
Your group meets with me to discuss the content of the presentation. Note
that everyone in the group is responsible for knowing all the content.
Make sure you are signed up on Googledocs (link in Moodle). If you have not

TOPICS for oral presentations
TOPIC depends on your program: Under “OPTIONS” choose ONE of the bullets as
a topic. I’ve tried to choose interesting options specific to your program; but don’t
hesitate to propose other ideas to me.
Audio and video are only permitted (and not counted in the time) for music, theatre,
dance, and in some cases fine arts.
Literature presentations may read the excerpts (possibly in French) being analyzed. This
is not counted in the time.
Bioecology
OPTIONS
Explain a particular laboratory / field trip experiment you have done. Follow the
system of a lab report.
o Present the concept being explored
o Hypotheses of the experiment if applicable
o Procedure of the experiment
o Results
o Post-analysis: any errors made in the experiment. Further applications
of the results.
Cinema
OPTIONS:
Any of the options from literature or theatre
Choose a film. Create a thesis statement about it. The presentation will prove the
thesis statement. The ideas should come from a large number of sources, which you
will need to cite.
Community recreation and leadership training
Create a specific event. Describe it briefly.
Now design the event from start to finish using the concepts of your program.
Divide the presentation logically into sections.
Dance
OPTIONS:
Cegep Saint-Laurent
604-GPS-SL Winter 2025
Present a dance performance and deeply analyze it.
Deeply analyze a specific aspect of a dance performance.
Fine arts
OPTIONS:
Present a technique in fine arts
o Explain the technique briefly
o Show how different visual artists (between 2 and 5) have implemented it.
Present some of your own key art projects in detail (pictures are ok). Be critical,
analyzing how you have evolved throughout your projects, as well as aspects you
could have done better (this will be individual).
Analyze the meaning of a single work of visual art. Present its meaning as a thesis
statement. (If there are multiple theories, present just one). The sections of the
presentation will each contribute to proving the thesis. You must cite a large
number of sources.
Languages
OPTIONS:
Present a specific grammar concept and how it is implemented in different ways across
some different languages.
o In the intro, explain the concept briefly.
o Each section of the oral (between 3 and 6) focuses on one language.
Present a single language and show us how it works similarly or differently from English
or French.
o Each section of the oral (between 3 and 5) consists of one specific concept.
Present a concept in translation and show different examples of how to apply it
o The intro presents the concept briefly (explaining it only).
o Each section of the oral (between 3 and 6) consists of an example.
Show different ways to translate a single piece of text, and the advantages and
disadvantages of each.
o Each section of the oral (between 2 and 4) consists of one way.
Present a language that is disappearing. Present 3-4 main causes (not more) for its
current state. Provide a lot of detail.
o Each section of the oral is a reason.
Feel free to propose another option.
Literature
OPTIONS:
Cegep Saint-Laurent
604-GPS-SL Winter 2025
Present a concept in literature and show how between 2 and 4 different works of
literature OR authors (in English or French) have dealt with it. Look at similarities
and differences.
Present a poem or other very short work (read it; time is not counted) or excerpt
and analyze it in detail. Use concepts from literature. It can also be in French.
o Each section of the oral (between 3 and 5) deals with a different aspect.
Choose a piece of literature. Create a thesis statement about it. The presentation
will consist of various arguments proving the thesis statement, using many sources.
Music
OPTIONS:
Present a piece of music and analyze it in detail. Focus on its musical aspects, not its
contextual or historical aspects.
o Each section (between 2 and 5) of the oral analyzes one aspect of the piece.
o Play excerpts of the piece demonstrating each concept.
Present a piece of music software. Go into detail about how it works.
o Each section of the oral is an aspect of the software.
o The powerpoint should have lots of screenshots / video captures.
Present a modern electronic instrument (synthesizer, effects pedal, Eurorack
module, etc.). Go into detail about how it works and what it does. For example,

[Link]
o If you need equipment (speakers etc) we will try to get it from the CEGEP.
o Each section of the oral is an aspect of how it works.
o have a very detailed powerpoint with lots of images, videos, and audio
examples.
Present a type of music from a country outside of Canada or the US. Show how it
works (musically).
o The intro should briefly give background such as geography, history, etc. No
other part will discuss history. Keep this very short: it’s not the focus.
o Each section of the body explains one aspect of the music
o Originality favoured.
o Complexity required.
Social science (Human science)
Choose a focused topic from your field. Create a thesis statement about it. The
presentation will consist of proving the thesis statement, using a large number of sources.
Theatre
OPTIONS:
Any of the options for literature
Cegep Saint-Laurent
604-GPS-SL Winter 2025
Any of the options for cinema
Present a single technique used in acting.
o Explain how the technique works.
o Create 2-3 (memorized) mini-scenes that use the technique
(monologues or dialogues). Explain how the technique helped in each
case. Be creative 😊
Choose a number of techniques an actor should use. For each technique, create
two scenes: one that uses the technique well, and another that uses it badly or
not at all.
Tremplin DEC: Choose an option above (except science) from the field you are most likely to
enter. In your case, you will need to do a lot of research. Your oral needs to be as complex as
the other students’!
