1.

With a neat free hand sketch, show the piston, cylinder, connecting rod and crack assembly for
an IC Engine at its position shown below. Practice all options,

(1) 450 (5) intake

(2) 900 (6) compression
after the beginning of stroke
(3) 1350 (7) power
(4) 1750 (8) exhaust

2. Draw the following:

Actual valve timing diagram 4 stoke cycle SI
for a engine
Ideal P-V diagram 2 stoke cycle CI

3.(i) With neat sketches describe briefly the (1) Ignition/ (2) Lubrication/ (3) cooling system of IC
Engine. Practice all options.
A. What happens if (2) Lubrication/ (3) cooling of above question 3(i) NOT done?
B. What is Supercharging? Scavenging? Detonation? Valve Overlap?

4. With a neat sketch, show how valves of an IC Engine operates.

5.(i) Total Volume of a Motor bike is 142.54 cc with its compression ratio 8.13 and bore 56.4 mm.
Calculate its stroke and engine capacity [5 cm, 125 cc]

5.(ii) A 1500 cc 4-cylinder car engine has its piston stroke length 3/π times to its bore. Calculate its
stroke length and crank radius (7.58 cm, 3.97 cm)

1. Why studying ME is the dream of nearly every student? With reference to 3 basic elements:
energy, force and power, why ME is called mother of E? There is a great scope of job avenues
for M engineers all over the world. List some of the related industries. (M=Mechanical,
E=Engineering)
2. Why ME is called the mother of E? How long the demand for M engineers will remain on the
earth? In which areas M engineers play a central role? Give examples of some industries with its
systems and sub-systems. What are the scope, duties, responsibilities and salary structure of M
engineers in renewable energy sector? (New)

3. According to ASME define a “standard”. How it becomes a “Code”? “An engineer has an ethical
responsibility to report all safety issues even though he/she may be fired, penalized or black
listed”-explain

Codes and Standards

ASME is one of the oldest standards-developing organizations in America. It produces approximately 600 codes and standards, covering many technical
areas, such as boiler components, elevators, and measurement of fluid flow in closed conduits, cranes, hand tools, fasteners, and machine tools. Note
that according to ASME

A Standard can be defined as a set of technical definitions and guidelines that function as instructions for designers, manufacturers, operators, or users
of equipment.

A standard becomes a Code when it has been adopted by one or more governmental bodies and is enforceable by law, or when it has been incorporated
into a business contract.

4. Distinguish between exhaustible and renewable energy with examples. What are the fossil
fuels? Classify them with examples. Distinguish between higher and lower
heating value of a fuel. Arrange 4 types of coal according to their heating values. (New)

5. Distinguish between renewable and Non-renewable sources of energy. What is wind energy?
What is meant by HAWT, VAWT, power coefficient, tip speed ratio, solidity and Betz limit
(16/27=0.5926 or 59.3%)?

6. What is solar energy? What are the processes / ways of converting solar energy into other forms
of energy? Give Examples. Define P-type and N-type semiconductors and PN junction. Describe
with a neat sketch how solar cell convert sunlight into useful power.

7. Define a radioactive material. How nuclear energy is available a radioactive material? Give an
example. With a neat sketch, show how electrical energy is obtained from a nuclear power
plant.
8. A wind turbine of rotor diameter 10 m extracts 750 watt power at a wind speed of 4 m/s. Find
its power coefficient considering density of air 1.1936 Kg/m3 [0.25]. With neat sketches of wind
profiles at ground level and at top of hills, show how wind speed increases with different types
of hills.

9. What are the basic types of environmental pollution? What are their main compositions?
Mention the various health problems associated with these pollutions.

C. Identify the components of the gas turbine as shown in the following figure
D. Draw the block diagram, T-S and P-V diagrams of a GT plant employing the following:
(1) with an intercooler
closed cycle gas turbine plant (2) with a reheater
(3) with a regenerator
(4) with an intercooler and reheater
(5) with reheater and regenerator
(6) with an intercooler, reheater and
regenerator
