A .EDS3701 is offered strictly online .Explain what online learning is according to your own understanding
?include both advantages and disadvantages of this learning method .Use your own learning
experiences at UNISA .
-Referring strictly from my vocabulary ,Online learning is means an individual learns remotely .It is an
instruction that is delivered electronically through various multimedia and internet platforms and
applications .It is used mutually with other terms such as web-based learning e-learning ,computer
assisted instruction ,and internet –based learning .It is mostly recommended for stay-home students
,distance learning .The pros that I came across for the past 3 years at UNISA are :Communication ,I was
and still able to communicate with lectures and mates through multiple channels .Accessibility ,I can
study and learn from everywhere in the world all because of distance learning .Flexibility ,I have the
freedom to juggle my career and school because they are not tied down to a fixed schedule .Education
,We get the same quality of education same as the full –learning students and beside that ,it helps
people of all ages to further their education and knowledge .The cons I came across so far was on my
first year when I was computer illiterate ,everything couldn’t make sense until i made Youtube videos
my friends .More screen time ,I spend more than 7 hours on my computer to study and to write my
assignments than with my family or myself ,Technical issues MYUNISA tend to be down and it does
when I need to do an important activity such quizzes or forum .More independent its more like search
deeper or fail kind of thing because if I don’t get access to prescribed book I relax and time waits for
man .
B .Explain how collaborative learning is used in the EDS3701 module at the University Of South Africa
(UNISA)
-Firstly allow me to define what collaborative learning refers to ,it is a situation in which two or more
people learn or attempt to learn something together .The purpose of the module is to develop
interpretive ,normative ,and critical views on education .Student teachers will be exposed to a variety of
existing education issues and approaches and will be expected to critically reflect ,discuss and comment
on the viewpoints ,content and context of educational thought and practice associated with these issues
and approaches .Usually EDS3701 requires students are working in groups of two or more ,mutually
searching for understanding ,solutions , meanings ,or creating a product .For example :I was allocated in
group 2E on the EDS3701 module ,this literally shows an example of a collaborative learning on this
module .The main advantage of collaboration learning on this module is that it increases a student’s
self-awareness and curiosity about how other students learn which enables them to learn more easily
and effectively inside and beyond the classroom .
C .Why do you think EDS3701 students are reluctant to participate in discussion forums and e-tutor
classes ?
-In most cases students think participating in discussions and e-tutor classes is not important and less
advantageous and does not worth marks .The major one in every student’s view is the lack of access to
personal computer or smartphone ,as well the internet . Followed by their poor learning habits and lack
of technology skills .I realized few things that can actually be a doom for students not to participate
,firstly many online students complain that they are having disrupted internet connection .Student’s
unfamiliarity with the technology makes it difficult for them to engage on time in online teaching and
learning .Lastly ,using a computer or smart phone for personal pleasures .
