EXPLORING the Essence of

Mathematics:
A Journey
into its
Nature and Foundations
Mathematics
- Present in everything we do; it is the building block of our
daily activities.
Mathematics is a tool
Mathematics, as a tool, is immensely useful, practical, and
powerful.
Mathematics is our sense to decipher patterns,
relationship, and logical connection. It is our whole new
way to see and understand the modern world.
THE ESSENTIAL
ROLES OF
MATHEMATICS
Mathematics has countless hidden uses and applications. It
is not only something that delights our mind but it also
allows us to learn and understand the natural order of the
world.
Mathematics helps us to take the complex processes that is
naturally occuring in the world around us and it represents them
by utilizing logic to make things more organized and more
efficient.
PATTERNS
Pattern are regular, repeated, or recurring
forms or designs.

Patterns can be found in nature, in human-made

designs, or in abstract ideas.
Pattern of Visuals

Visual pattern are often unpredictable,

never quite repeatable, and often
contain fractals. These patterns are
can be seen from the seeds and
pinecones to the branches and leaves.
They are also visible in self-similar
replication of trees, ferns, plants
throughout nature.
Patterns of Flow

The flows of liquid provides an

inexhaustible supply of nature’s patterns.
Patterns of flow are usually found in the
water, stone, and even in the growth of
trees. There is also a flow pattern
present in meandering rivers with the
repetition of undulating line.
Pattern of Movement

In the human walk, the feet strike the ground in a

regular rhythm: the left-right-left-right-left rhythm.
When a horse, a four-legged creature walks, there is
more of a complex but equally rhythmic pattern. This
prevalence of pattern in locomotion extends to the
scuttling insect, the flights jellyfish, and also the wave-
like movements of fish worms, and snakes.

Pattern of Rhythm

Rhythm is conceivably the most basic pattern in

nature. Our heart and lungs follow a regular repeated
pattern of sounds and movement whose timing is
adapted to body’s needs. Many of nature’s rhythm
are most likely similar to a heartbeat, while others
are like breathing. The beating of heart, as well as
breathing, have default pattern
Pattern of texture
A texture is a quality of a certain object that we
sense through touch. It exists as a literal surface
that we can feel, see, and imagine. Texture are of
many kinds. It can be bristly, and rough, but it
can also be smooth, cold, and hard.

Geometric Patterns
A geometric pattern is a kind of pattern
which consist of a series of shapes that are
typically repeated. Those are regularities in the
natural world that are repeated in a predictable
manner. Geometrical patterns are usually
visible on cacti succulents
Spirals

PATTERNS FOUND IN NATURE

Wave and Dunes
Common patterns appear
in nature, just like what we see
when we look closely at plants,
flowers, animals, and even at
our bodies. These common
patterns are all incorporated in
Animal’s Spot many natural things
Symmetry

Symmetry has a vital

In mathematics, if role in pattern
a figure can be formation. It is used to
folded or divided classical and organize
into two halves information about
which are the patters by classifying
same, such figure the motion or
is called a deformation of both
symmetric figure. pattern structureand
processes.
KINDS OF SYMMETRY
REFLECTION SYMMETRY
Sometimes called line symmetry called line
symmetry or mirror symmetry or mirror symmetry,
captures symmetries when the left half of a pattern
is the same as the right half.

ROTATIONAL SYMMETRY
The degree of rotational symmetry of an object is
recognized by the number of the distinct
orientations in which it looks the same for each
rotation.

TRANSLATIONAL SYMMETRY
Translation acquire symmetries when units are
repeated and turn out having identical figures, like
bees honeycomb with hexagonal tiles.
Reflection

By examining the structure of patterns, mathematics helps us

understand and learn more about the world. It is sometimes
said that math is the "building block of our daily activities." It
functions as our foundation since it penetrates every decision
we make. Though we might not always observe it,
mathematics is constantly used in everyday circumstances. It
is used in real-world contexts outside of the classroom, such
as grocery shopping, measuring ingredients for recipes,
comparing prices, allocating our allowance, and numerous
other tasks. As we get deeper comprehension of mathematics,
we begin to understand that it has several roles to fulfill.

ESTROPIA, LAURICE CARMELA

Reflection

In Nature of Mathematics, Stewart presents mathematics as

a formal system born from human cognitive evolution and
cultural development. Initially, our ancestors identified
patterns and shapes, which evolved into more sophisticated
mathematical concepts integral to civilization. Recognizing
that the natural world is intricately woven with
mathematical patterns, humans have leveraged mathematics
to decipher and understand these patterns. Mathematics,
therefore, is not merely an abstract discipline but a
fundamental tool that permeates every aspect of life, from
basic daily tasks to advanced technological innovations. This
reflection underscores how mathematics, as a building block
of human activity, enhances our comprehension of the world
around us.

ARDIMER, EDRIANE
Reflection

Although mathematics is sometimes perceived as

being extremely difficult, it's not just about numbers
and computatios. Throughout the lesson, I discovered
that mathematics is a subject that we come across on
a daily basis and that it can be used to every aspect of
our lives. Just by observing your environment, we are
able to distinguish various forms, patterns, and shapes.
Math is even used in the design of clothing that we
wear. Just as mathematics is present in both naturally
occurring things and the natural world, like in trees
and flowers. To sum up, life is mathematics, and we
can't exist without the use of mathematics.

MORALES, MICHAEL
Reflection

In our modern world mathematics plays a significant role in

our society many views that it is anywhere but sometimes
they don’t acknowledge it. My personal perspective in
mathematics is you can use it anywhere anytime and in many
circumstances. With the help of this lesson i realize that
mathematics can be shown anywhere even when you just
stare anywhere, just sitting, planning actually anywhere. It is
also change my perspective i acknowledge it as my pattern in
my everyday routine. Mathematics isn’t all about numbers
because it can be everything and also a key to unlock every
part of mystery.

GARCIA, JUSTINE
Reflection

In my school experience, a common misconception about

math is that it is difficult. I often heard people say, “Why do we
need to learn this? I will never use it in my job”. However, after
our discussion, I discovered that math is all around us, not just
in numbers, but also in patterns and nature. While math might
have challenged us with calculations in school, when we look at
the bigger picture, it has made our lives easier. How could we
tell time, measure things, or even understand the world around
us without math? I have come to realize that math is both fun
and useful. Indeed, mathematics is everywhere. Every look we
take and every action we make involves mathematics.

ROSALES, JEFFREY ANNE

Reflection
Throughout the lesson, I've come to realize that mathematics
is an essential part of everyday life given that it helps us solve
problems as well as understand the world around us. It extends
beyond the classroom and serves as a valuable tool in our daily
lives. By seeing math as a way to understand the patterns and
structures around us, we can appreciate its importance in all
kinds of activities. Math is present in everything, from seeing
natural patterns like the structures of sunflowers and snowflakes
to doing everyday chores like cooking, baking, and managing
money. In the field of accounting, mathematics is essential for
analyzing financial data, monitoring cash flow, and presenting
information through charts and graphs. As Galileo Galilei
famously said, "Mathematics is the language in which God has
written the universe," showing how deeply math is connected to
everything around us.

LAGRISOLA,, RIZIA VEL

Reflection

With the help of this lesson, I’ve learned a lot of

things. The first thing I learned is that
mathematics is everywhere; it is not only about
numbers. Every little thing we do and every little
action we take has mathematics. Galileo Galilei
also contributed to my knowledge and
understanding regarding this topic; he said that
mathematics is our universal language. In this
world, after learning a lot from this topic, in
every little thing I do, I will always remember that
it involves math. To end with a quote
“mathematics is the hidden secret to
understanding the world.” as stated by Roger
Antonsen.
