11. Given a square paper ABCD with AB = 2. A sector is cut from the paper such that the centre of the
sector O is the mid-point of the side DA, the sector touches the mid-point M of the side BC and meets
the points P, Q on the sides of AB, DC respectively as shown in Figure 1. A cone is formed from the
sector such that OP meets OQ. Figure 2 shows a vertical cross section of the cone.

(a) Find the volume of the cone. Correct your answer to 3 significant figures. (4 marks)
(b) David claims that since the arc of the sector touches a side of the square paper, the volume of the paper
cone is the greatest. Sarah attempts to cut another sector from the same piece of square paper ABCD so
that the volume of the paper cone formed is greater than that found in (a). Can her attempt be
successfully done? Explain your answer. (3 marks)
