CHAPTER I

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Academic pressure is not strange to many, specifically on students with rising

numbers on mental health issue aiming student. Nowadays, it gained a significant

amount of attention as a research subject as still 45% of students in high school

admitted to being stress almost every day in school. With that in mind, the findings

from this studies can have a significance to an ever growing issues in students

mental health, primary in Senior High School students that is looking for an evidence-

based strategies to support their students mental health and academic success.

According to Pacific Teen Treatment, academic pressure is defined as "an experience

in which a student is burdened by the demands of time and energy to achieve

specific academic goals". The stress can come from many different sources that can

affect on students' emotional and academic performance. For that, it has a handful

effects to students who experience such pressure such as stimulant abuse (e.g.

caffeine, medications, etc.), sleep difficulties, anxiety, etc. In addition, academic

pressure does not always result to a better grades, nor an increase/improvement to

test scores. Recent research has found out that excessive levels of academic stress

can result to an "increased prevalence of psychological and physical problems like

depression, anxiety, nervousness, and stress-related disorders," which in turn can

adversely affect academic results (Alsulami, et. Al.2018). Another study had shown

that teachers and parents have more expectations to students who achieve with such

great academic performance, thus resulting in greater academic pressure. If not

SCHOOL

succeed to said expectation, it can cause negative effects that can cause unwanted

behavior of students (Ma et al., 2018; Çelik, 2019).

Another study had shown that teachers and parents have more expectations to

students who achieve with such great academic performance, thus resulting in

greater academic pressure. If not succeed to said expectation, it can cause negative

effects that can cause unwanted behavior of students (Ma et al., 2018; Çelik, 2019).

The researchers aim to improve the mental state of the students in Samaria Senior

Highschool. The researchers encourage students to take a well needed rest, this is

not only to help them clear out their minds, but also for them to relax their body,

prioritizing self care such as physical activities, hobbies, and by seeking support

from teachers and peers to reduce stress and pressure.

The researchers aim to develop and implement an intervention related to academic

pressure, for the students to enhance their academic performance. By implementing

this. intervention, the researchers promotes the mental well-being of the students in

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

At Samaria Senior High School, students face intense academic pressure, leading to

stress and challenges in meeting deadlines and group project requirements

Observations reveal that this pressure negatively impacts students' behavior and

well-being. Identifying the root causes of academic pressure is crucial for

implementing interventions to support students in managing their workload and

fostering a more supportive learning environment.

This research seeks to answer the following:

[Link] you experience feelings of anxiety or frustration related to schoolwork?

2. On a scale of 1 to 10, how stressed do you feel due to academic demands

3. Is there a significant difference in academic pressure experienced by students

from different socioeconomic backgrounds?

4. Does academic pressure predict students' academic motivation?

5. Is there a significant relationship between academic pressure and students' self-

esteem?

HYPOTHESIS

Hypothesis 1: When students feel a lot of pressure, they get more stressed and

anxious, which makes it harder for them to do well in school.

Hypothesis 2: If students are under a lot of pressure, they might start doing things

like procrastinating or trying to be perfect, which can make them even more stressed

and make it harder to do well in school.

Hypothesis 3: Having a supportive school environment and learning how to deal with

stress can help students handle the pressure better, so they feel less stressed and

do better in school.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This aims to improve the students' academic performance in every subjects as we

find resolution through this humble research. Our target in this research are the

students of Samaria Senior High School, from Grades 11 & 12, with the strands

HUMSS, GAS, and ABM, with the inclusion of ALS, SPED.

Though we aim for the goodness of the many, this research is delimited to all

Samaria Senior High School students in Tala, Caloocan City as most of the

information gathered is from the school, and thus not applicable to others outside

the campus. Also, it only focuses on those who are affected by the academic

pressure, and so not all can apply this said research for themselves. This also not

cover other pressures students experience (e.g. peer pressure, bullying.

discrimination, etc.)
