Internal choice is provided in one of these sub-parts.
37 Refining is the process of purification of metals. One of the important 4
method of refining is electrolysis. In electrolysis, electrical energy is
used to bring about a non-spontaneous redox reaction. This is done by
passing an electric current through a liquid containing ions, known as an
electrolyte. In contrast to metals, the current in electrolytes is carried by
the movement of ions rather than the movement of electrons. The solid
conductors inserted into the liquid are called electrodes, the one with a
positive charge is called the anode (because it attracts anions) and the
one with the negative charge is called the cathode.
A diagrammatic representation of electrolysis of copper is shown below:
(a) Name the electrolyte used in refining of copper.

(b) i. Cu -------> Cu 2+ + 2e

38 Mendel's experiments on inheritance of traits. 4

Mendel used a number of visible contrasting characters of garden pea

like shape and form (round/ wrinkled) seeds, height (tall/ short) ,
white/violet flowers, etc. He made crosses between pea plants with
different characters, there were no halfway or intermediate characters.
Only one of the parental traits appeared in the F1 generation. When the
F1 plants were self-pollinated, the F2 progeny consists of plants with both
the traits.

When a cross is made between a tall plant with round seeds, with a short
plant with wrinkled seeds, the F progeny plants were all tall with round
plants. When the F1 plants are self-pollinated, the F₂ progeny consisted
of some tall plants with round seeds and some short plants with wrinkled
seeds; these two are the parental types of combinations of traits.

There were also some new combinations like tall plants with wrinkled
seeds and short plants with round seeds.
(a) Which genetic material is responsible for the inheritance of traits?

(b) In what ratio, the traits were obtained in F2 progeny?

(c) What type of trait appeared and what type trait remained hidden in F1
generation?

Or

(c) What type of traits you observed in F2 progeny, when F1 plants were
self-pollinated?
39 A rainbow is a spectacular phenomenon we witness in nature. It is a 4
multi-coloured arc formed by light. When the sunlight enters the water
droplet, it undergoes refraction at the surface. When these rays hit the
other end of the droplet, they get internally reflected, dispersing into
seven colours. Therefore, we can say that the formation of a rainbow is
the combination of various phenomena like internal reflection, refraction,
and dispersion.

(a) The rainbow is observed in the direction _____.

(i) Opposite of the Moon

(ii) Opposite of the Sun
(iii) Both (i) & (ii)
(iv) None of the options

(b) Why rainbow cannot be seen on the moon?

(c) What is the role of water droplets in the formation of a rainbow?
Or
(c) Which are the various phenomena responsible for the formation of a
rainbow?
