Automation

Introduction:
A large increase in the number of tests and the need of accuracy stimulates
an introduction of automation into clinical laboratories.
An automated analyser (analyzer) is a medical laboratory instrument
designed to measure different chemicals and other characteristics in a large
number of samples quickly, with minimum human support.

Classification of Analysers:
1. Semi auto analyser: These are available in the range of 1.5 to 3.0 lacks. In
this instrument, sample and reagent are mixed and fed manually; the
instrument will give the results.
2. Fully automated analyser:
a. Batch analyser:
1. In this instrument, sample and reagent are mixed and fed
automatically.
2. This instrument will perform particular test on each group of samples.
b. Random access analyser:
1. Patient samples are kept in a machine and enter the list of tests
required by individual sample.
2. Then the computer will perform all the tests on particular sample.
3. Automatically computer will perform select of reagent, mixing,
incubation then finally gives result.
4. Then move to next sample.
3. Hematology analyser (Cell counter):
a. Used to perform complete blood picture
b. It includes RBC count, WBC count, Differential count Hb, PCV, MCV etc..

Benefits of analysers:
1. Chances of manual errors are reduced.
2. Analysers are easy to operate as most of the steps are automatic.
3. Work load in the laboratory is finished in a couple of hours (2-3 hrs)
4. Analysers have digital display and give printout of results.
5. Reagent volume used per test is very less.
6. Saves time, glassware and workspace so it justifies higher investment on
the instrument.
7. We can do upto 300 samples/hour.
