Introduction
English is more than just a subject in school—it’s a crucial skill that helps students communicate, think
critically, and access global opportunities. As one of the official languages of the Philippines, English is
widely used in education, business, and international affairs. Because of this, students are expected to
develop strong English proficiency throughout their academic journey. However, recent studies show
that Filipino students’ English skills have been declining, raising concerns about their readiness for
higher education and future careers (PIDS, 2023).
Several factors influence students’ performance in English. Motivation plays a key role, students who are
more engaged and interested in learning tend to perform better (Dajuela, S., A., et al., 2023). Teaching
strategies, including interactive and student-centered approaches, have also been shown to enhance
language learning. Additionally, parental involvement contributes to better student outcomes, as
children with supportive home environments often develop stronger language skills (Santos, A., et al,
2022).
This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of English instruction among Grade 10 students at Wright
National High School by analyzing their third-quarter grades for the school year 2024-2025. By
understanding the factors that contribute to students’ strengths and struggles in English, this research
can provide insights to improve teaching methods and support systems. Strengthening students’ English
skills is not just about academic success, it’s about equipping
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
This study focuses on analyzing the third-quarter performance in English among Grade 10 SPA students
at Wright National High School for the school year 2024-2025. Specifically, it seeks to answer the
following research questions:
1. What is the overall performance of Grade 10 SPA students in English based on their third-quarter
grades?
2. What factors influence students’ performance in English, such as motivation, teacher support, and
learning strategies?
3. Are there noticeable differences in performance among students based on their learning backgrounds
and study habits.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The significance of this study lies in its potential to improve English education for Grade 10 SPA students
at Wright National High School. By analyzing their third-quarter performance, this research offers
valuable insights into how well students are grasping English concepts and what factors contribute to
their success or struggles.
First, understanding students' strengths and weaknesses can help teachers refine their instructional
methods. If certain teaching approaches are more effective, they can be emphasized, while strategies
that are less effective can be improved. Additionally, identifying learning gaps will allow educators to
adjust lesson plans and provide targeted support where needed.
Second, this study can guide school administrators in making informed decisions about curriculum
improvements and resource allocation. If the findings highlight a need for additional learning materials,
teacher training, or academic interventions, the school can prioritize these initiatives to enhance student
learning.
Lastly, improving English proficiency benefits students beyond the classroom. Strong English skills are
essential for success in higher education and future careers, as well as for effective communication in a
globalized world. By strengthening English instruction, this study contributes to the long-term academic
and professional growth of Grade 10 SPA students.
