Loading Class 7 IMDG (International Maritime Dangerous Goods) cargo, which refers to
radioactive materials, requires strict adherence to international safety standards. Here’s a
step-by-step guide to loading Class 7 cargo on a ship:
### 1. Review Regulations and Documentation
- IMDG Code: Familiarize yourself with the latest edition of the IMDG Code, especially
Part 7, which deals with Class 7 (Radioactive Materials).
- Competent Authority Approval: Ensure that the cargo has received approval from the
competent national or international authority for transportation.
- Documentation: Confirm the Shipper’s Declaration for Dangerous Goods (DGD),
Transport Index (TI), and other necessary paperwork like the Certificate of Compliance for
Class 7 cargo.
### 2. Cargo Packaging
- Type of Packaging: Verify that the radioactive material is properly packed in approved
packaging (Type A, Type B(U), Type B(M), or Type C, depending on the material and its
radioactivity).
- Marking and Labeling: Ensure packages are correctly marked and labeled with the UN
number, radioactive labels, and other required symbols.
- Shielding: Ensure that the shielding of the package is appropriate to minimize radiation
exposure.
### 3. Pre-Loading Inspection
- Radiation Levels: Measure radiation levels around the cargo. Ensure they are within the
acceptable limits stated in the IMDG Code.
- Transport Index (TI): Check the TI and ensure it matches the declaration, as it
determines the segregation and stowage distance from crew and passengers.
- Visual Inspection: Conduct a thorough visual inspection for leaks or damage to the
package.
### 4. Stowage and Segregation
- Stowage Category: Follow the stowage instructions based on the specific radioactive
material being transported. Class 7 cargo often requires *"Category A"* stowage, which
mandates it being kept away from populated areas of the vessel.
- Segregation: Ensure proper segregation from incompatible goods, especially flammable,
explosive, or reactive substances, as specified in the IMDG Code.
- Distance from Crew/Passengers: Maintain safe distances between the radioactive
material and the ship's crew or any passengers, based on the Transport Index.
### 5. Ventilation and Temperature Control
- Ventilation: Class 7 cargo might need specific ventilation requirements to avoid the
buildup of hazardous gases or radiation.
- Temperature: Ensure the stowage area is temperature-controlled if required by the
cargo’s nature (e.g., if transporting spent nuclear fuel or certain isotopes).
### 6. Securing the Cargo
- Securing Measures: Properly secure the cargo to avoid movement during the voyage.
This is especially important to prevent the shielding material from being compromised.
- Stability: Ensure the ship’s stability is not adversely affected by the weight or stowage
of the radioactive cargo.
### 7. Radiation Monitoring
- Monitoring Equipment: Ensure that radiation monitoring equipment is installed and
functional during the voyage to check for any abnormal radiation levels.
- Emergency Procedures: Prepare the crew with clear emergency procedures in case of a
radiation leak or other incidents. Ensure the availability of appropriate protective
equipment.
### 8. Notifying Authorities
- Port Authorities: Notify port authorities and the relevant national maritime authorities
in advance about the shipment of radioactive material.
- Emergency Response Plans: Have an emergency response plan in place in case of a spill,
fire, or other accidents involving Class 7 cargo.
### 9. Loading
- Loading Plan: Follow the pre-approved loading plan, ensuring that the radioactive cargo
is loaded into the designated area without interference from other cargoes.
- Supervision: Ensure that trained personnel supervise the loading and securing of the
cargo at all times.
By adhering to these steps, you ensure that Class 7 IMDG cargo is loaded safely and in
compliance with international regulations.

surface heal flux using infrared camera
Product tankers
Transport refined petroleum products like gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and heating oil
Distribute refined products from refineries to markets
Have multiple cargo tanks and a complex pumping and piping system
Can carry between 20,000 to 40,000 cubic meters of liquid bulk cargo
Have two types: clean product tankers for light petroleum products and dirty product
tankers for heavy petroleum products
Chemical tankers
Transport liquid chemicals like methanol, benzene, toluene, and alcohol
Can carry any liquids in bulk, including vegetable oils
Are smaller than other tanker types due to the specialized nature of their cargo
Require high cleaning standards because the cargo can be sensitive, reactive, and toxic
Have a long and flat deck in front of the superstructure with a system of vents and pipelines
for ballast and cargo
Tank cleaning procedures for chemical tankers involve preparing the tank, applying
chemicals, rinsing, and inspecting. The steps vary depending on the type of cargo and vessel.
Tank preparation
Empty and purge the tank to remove flammable or toxic gases
Plan the cleaning process
Chemical application
Choose chemicals based on the type of contaminants and tank material
Apply chemicals using agitation or circulation
Allow the chemicals to sit for the recommended exposure time
Rinsing
Rinse the tank with clean water to remove chemicals and residues
Flush low points in the cargo lines by opening and closing the valve several times
Remove drain plugs to rinse away residues
Inspection
Inspect the tank to assess the effectiveness of the cleaning process
Verify that the tank meets the water-white standard
Water-white standard
The water-white standard means that fresh water added to the tank will not change in color,
odor, or chemical composition.
Other considerations
The type of tank cleaning machine used depends on the tank's capacity and the efficiency of
the machine's coverage
The wash fluid can be sea or fresh water, with or without chemical additives
A "baffling plate" in a chemical tanker is a flat plate installed inside the tank, designed to
disrupt the flow of liquid cargo, preventing excessive sloshing and ensuring stability during
transport, especially when the tank is partially filled; essentially acting as a barrier to control
the movement of the liquid within the tanker, minimizing the impact on the tank walls and
improving safety.
Maximizing cargo on a bulk carrier requires careful planning, stability calculations, and
efficient cargo distribution. Here’s how you can do it:
1. Maximizing Cargo Intake
Load to the Summer Draft: Ensure the vessel is loaded to its maximum permissible draft as
per Load Line regulations.
Load Density Considerations: Some cargoes, like iron ore, are heavy but take up less space,
while others, like grains, are lighter and occupy more volume. Adjust loading plans
accordingly.
Use Load Compartments Efficiently: Load cargo evenly to avoid unnecessary air gaps and
maximize utilization of cargo holds.
Trim for Stability and Efficiency: Proper trimming of the cargo ensures maximum stowage
while maintaining a safe GM (metacentric height).
2. Cargo Planning and Stability
Use Cargo Plans and Loading Software: Loading computers help optimize weight distribution
while maintaining stability and avoiding excessive bending moments and shear forces.
Consider Strength Limits: Avoid overloading certain holds beyond the ship’s structural limits,
as excessive load in one area can cause hull stress.
Ballasting: Use ballast tanks strategically to optimize trim, list, and hull strength while
keeping the vessel at the right draft for maximum cargo intake.
3. Reducing Deadweight Consumption
Minimize Fuel and Freshwater Load: Before loading cargo, reduce bunker and freshwater
intake to free up more deadweight for cargo.
Monitor Reserve Buoyancy: Ensure the ship remains within the freeboard requirements to
prevent safety risks.
4. Special Cargo Handling
Cargo Consolidation: Bulk cargoes like coal or grain settle over time. Use proper loading
techniques like vibrators or compacting to reduce voids.
Cargo Sequencing: Load high-density cargo first to ensure a low center of gravity, reducing
the risk of excessive heeling.
Dangers of Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S) on Ships
Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) is a highly toxic, flammable, and corrosive gas commonly found in
crude oil, petroleum products, and some bulk cargoes. It poses serious hazards to crew
safety, vessel operations, and cargo handling.
1. Health Hazards
Extremely Toxic: Even at low concentrations, H₂S can cause irritation, dizziness, and
unconsciousness. Prolonged exposure can be fatal.
Rapid Paralysis of Respiratory System: At high concentrations (>500 ppm), it can cause
sudden collapse and death within minutes.
Olfactory Fatigue: The gas has a "rotten egg" smell at low concentrations, but prolonged
exposure dulls the sense of smell, making it more dangerous.
Absorption Through Skin & Eyes: H₂S can also irritate the skin and eyes, leading to severe
discomfort.
2. Risks in Cargo Handling
Presence in Cargo Tanks: Common in crude oil, residual fuel oil, and some bulk cargoes like
sulfur, coal, and animal waste.
Danger in Enclosed Spaces: H₂S accumulates in confined spaces like pump rooms, cargo
tanks, and bilges, increasing the risk of poisoning.
Risk During Purging & Venting: When venting cargo tanks, high concentrations of H₂S can
escape, endangering crew members on deck.
3. Operational Hazards
Corrosion of Equipment: H₂S reacts with moisture to form sulfuric acid, leading to rapid
corrosion of pipelines, valves, and cargo tanks.
Explosion Risk: Being flammable, H₂S can form explosive mixtures with air, posing a fire and
explosion hazard.
Regulatory Violations: SOLAS and MARPOL set strict limits on exposure to H₂S in cargo
operations, and failure to comply can lead to detentions and penalties.
4. Safety Measures
Gas Detection & Monitoring: Use personal H₂S detectors and fixed gas monitoring systems
before entering enclosed spaces or handling cargo.
Proper Ventilation: Ensure tanks and enclosed spaces are well-ventilated before entry.
Use of Breathing Apparatus: SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus) should be used if
H₂S levels exceed safe limits.
Enclosed Space Entry Procedures: Always follow enclosed space entry protocols, including
risk assessments and permits.
Cargo Compatibility Check: Before loading, verify H₂S content in cargo and implement
appropriate safety measures.
To clarify, the IMDG (International Maritime Dangerous Goods) Code does not require
packing groups for certain classes of hazardous materials. Here's a more specific breakdown:
1. Class 1: Explosives
Packing groups are not assigned to explosives. Instead, explosives are classified by divisions
(e.g., Division 1.1, 1.2, etc.) based on their type and the nature of their hazard (e.g., mass
explosion hazard, projection hazard).
2. Class 7: Radioactive materials
Packing groups are not assigned to radioactive materials. Radioactive substances are
classified based on their category (such as Type A or Type B) and the level of radioactivity,
rather than packing groups.
3. Class 9: Miscellaneous dangerous substances and articles
Packing groups are not assigned to most substances in Class 9. This class includes materials
that present environmental or other hazards that don't neatly fit into other classes. While
some substances in Class 9 may have specific regulations or handling instructions, packing
groups are typically not assigned.
Other Classes:
For comparison, in other classes like Class 3 (Flammable Liquids), Class 4 (Flammable Solids),
Class 5 (Oxidizing Substances), Class 6 (Toxic Substances), and Class 8 (Corrosive Substances),
materials are assigned packing groups (I, II, or III), based on the severity of their hazard.
Packing Group I = High hazard
Packing Group II = Medium hazard
Packing Group III = Low hazard
To sum up, Classes 1, 7, and 9 typically do not use packing groups.
COP Alarms (SK Das)
1. Low Lubricating Oil Pressure Alarm: Low pressure can lead to overheating and damage to
the pump
bearings.
2. Lubricating Oil Temperature Alarm: High temperatures can indicate insufficient lubrication
or
potential overheating of the pump.
3. Pump Casing Overheat Alarm:Overheating may result from mechanical failure or
inadequate
cooling, risking pump integrity.
4. Pump Bearing Overheat Alarm: Overheated bearings can lead to catastrophic pump
failure.
5. Low Level Alarm in Lubricating Oil Tank: Ensures there is adequate oil supply for proper
pump
operation.
Parallax error in a draft survey occurs when the observer reads the draft marks from an
incorrect angle, leading to inaccurate draft measurements. This error happens because the
draft marks on a ship’s hull are viewed from a position that is not perfectly perpendicular to
the waterline, causing a distorted reading.
Causes of Parallax Error in Draft Surveys:
1. Incorrect Eye Level – If the observer looks at the draft marks from above or
below rather than at eye level with the waterline.
2. Water Disturbances – Waves, swell, or ripples can create an illusion of a
higher or lower draft reading.
3. Hull Curvature – Some ships have hull designs that make it harder to read
draft marks precisely.
4. Light Refraction – Changes in light angles can make the waterline appear
higher or lower than it actually is.
How to Minimize Parallax Error:
• Ensure the observer’s eye level is aligned with the waterline when reading
the draft.
• Take multiple readings from different positions to cross-check accuracy.
• Use a boat or draft gauge to get closer to the marks instead of reading from
the quay or deck.
• Take readings in calm water conditions when possible.
• Consider using laser or digital draft measurement devices for improved
accuracy.
There are very specific 7 conditions in Cockcroft for NUC. Mug them up:
1. Failure of propulsion machinery (internal to vessel)
2. same as above, external - ie propellor dropped in sea.
3. Failure of steering machinery (internal to vessel)
4. same as above, external. Ie rudder dropped at sea
5. Anchor down, not holding
6. Vessel with anchor chain down in deep waters
7. Sailing vessel becalmed I.e. no wind for sails to catch. (same as 1 or 2 above on PDV)
Nothing more, nothing less.
Slow steaming is not NUC.
