1. At one time in the far distant past, the scientists tell us, most of the land surface of the
earth must have been covered with trees. It is not so now. Whenever man has spread and
multiplied he has cleared space for himself, his animals and his crops, and in course of
time forests have been destroyed at a much faster than nature can replace them. It is only
the present century that man, warned by the results of his own thoughtless action, has
seriously concerned with the problem of replanting forest lands on a large scale, and so
repairing some of the damage that has been done.
2. Wood has always been amongst the most valuable of raw materials because of its
widespread usefulness as fuel and in building. It is employed today in countless ways and
is being manufactured in to various products. Our houses, our ships, our mines, our
furniture, require immense quantities, and though it is true that metals and cool are new
replacing wood for several purposes there is still a continuous demand for regular and
cheap supplies of timber. We manufacture most of our paper from it. In addition to
timber, we need the special products of the forests-rubber, medicine, cork etc. And there
is always the effect of the forests belts on climate and soil to be considered.
