EXPERIMENT NO. 03
Modulus of Elasticity of Concrete
Objectives
To determine the modulus of elasticity and Poisson’s ratio of concrete.
Standards
ASTM C-469
General Description
Introduction
Concrete is one of the most widely used construction materials in the world. It is composed
of cement, sand, aggregate, and water, which undergo hydration to form a hard, durable mass.
Importance
Due to the extensive use of concrete in structures, it is essential to evaluate its mechanical
properties. One such property is the modulus of elasticity, which measures the relationship
between applied stress and the induced strain.
Test Overview
The test for determining the modulus of elasticity of concrete involves subjecting a
cylindrical concrete specimen to compressive loads using a compressometer and a
compression testing machine. This test provides vital information about the deformation
characteristics and quality of concrete used in construction.

Test Sample Preparation
The sample preparation follows the same procedure as for compression testing of concrete
specimens.

Procedure
1. Setting up the Compressor meter:
Adjust the top and bottom frames of the compressometer using spacers.
Place the pivot rod on the screws and lock it firmly.
Position the compress meter at the center of the specimen.
Tighten the screws while ensuring the compressometer is correctly positioned.
Remove the spacers after securing the compressometer.
2. Testing of the Specimen:
Place the specimen in the compression machine.
Apply load at a rate of 140 kg/cm² per minute.
Increase the load until reaching (C+5) kg/cm², where C is 1/3rd of the average
compressive stress.
Hold the load for one minute before reducing it to 1.5 kg/cm².
Incrementally increase the load by 1T intervals and record the readings.
Plot a graph of stress versus strain using the recorded values.
