Task One – Language Analysis

Aims: To gauge your ability to analyse language in preparation for teaching it at a specified level
To increase your awareness of the depth of analysis needed when dealing with language in
Module 1

Task: Look at the following examples of target language from a conversation. Analyse them as
you would before you teach a lesson on this language area to a group of intermediate (B1)
students.

Target Language Examples:

If I were you, I’d study really hard.

If I pass the exam, I could go to England.
If you went to England, you might meet the Queen.

Task Two – Approaches and methods

Aims: To gauge your ability to relate the influence of SLA theories to specified approaches and
methodologies
To gauge your ability to identify and compare different methodological perspectives and
approaches
To gauge your ability to critically assess and evaluate the practical effectiveness of various
approaches, methodologies and techniques in different contexts and learning environments
To assess your current awareness of the principles underlying learning tasks

Task: Look at the following quote from a teacher:

‘Pre-teaching vocabulary is a waste of time’.

List up to five reasons supporting this statement and five reasons contradicting it.
For example:
 Learners won’t have a teacher to pre-teach vocab when they’re reading texts out of
class.

 We want students to focus on reading skills, not vocabulary, when engaging with a
text.
