Function Power distribution and circuit protection for vehicle modules and ECUs.
Fig. 1, Single SAM
Description
The single signal detect and actuation module (sSAM) is the primary module in the electrical system, combining chassis power
distribution, cab power distribution, and modular switch field functions into a single ECU. The sSAM reads input information
from sensors, switches, and databus messages, and drives output and CAN messages. High current Output loads, fuses, and
relays are located in the vehicle power distribution module (VPDM).
Refer to Power Distribution for more information on the operation of the VPDM.
The sSAM has 10 programming areas, each with a unique software part number. All 10 software part numbers are updated
simultaneously during programming, which prevents issues caused by incompatible software versions.
IMPORTANT: This section provides a general description of the sSAM. To understand a particular vehicle feature
or system, refer to the applicable section in this manual for more information.
Datalink Connections

The sSAM is connected directly to the cabin CAN datalink. All CAN communication to and from the sSAM occurs on cabin
CAN, however messages may be forwarded or received from other CAN or J1939 networks via the central gateway.
Refer to Central Gateway for more information.
The sSAM also receives inputs from the following functions, via a LIN connection:
• headlamp switch
• steering wheel switches
• multifunction turn signal switch
NOTE: The integrated modular switch field (MSF) in the sSAM also receives inputs from dash and sleeper
switches via the MQ-bus. Refer to Multiplexing for more information.
When DiagnosticLink is connected to the vehicle, it communicates with cabin CAN ECUs via the diagnostic CAN datalink.
The CGW routes diagnostic messages between the diagnostic CAN and cabin CAN datalink.
Functional Messaging and ECU Troubleshooting
To communicate with the ECU, unique diagnostic messages are used by the off-board tool during troubleshooting, distinct
from the set of messages used during normal operation. The set of messages used during normal operation is referred to as
functional messages, which are sent either on a schedule (cyclically) or upon a change of the data on the CAN datalink.
Messages used during troubleshooting operate on a request-and-response basis over the diagnostic CAN datalink. Any fault
reported over the CAN network is routed to diagnostic CAN by the CGW, and can be displayed when requested by
DiagnosticLink. DiagnosticLink can display input and output pin status information, software interlocks, and allows a user to
control inputs or outputs for troubleshooting. This information is displayed in DiagnosticLink panels.
ECU Configuration
The sSAM has parameters that can be viewed or changed for vehicle configuration. Parameters, referred to as fragments,
are collected into feature groups called domains. Parameters are security protected, and may have limited access depending
on credential.
sSAM software is programmed using DiagnosticLink, which updates to its same version or upgrades, if required. The
software programming procedure should only be performed in the following cases:
• For a feature upgrade: Adding a new feature to a vehicle may require a newer version of ECU software.
DiagnosticLink will automatically make available any necessary software upgrades.
• Fixing a problem in the existing software: In case a new version of ECU software is needed to fix a problem in the
existing ECU software, DiagnosticLink automatically makes available any necessary software upgrades.
IMPORTANT: Parameters can be changed to configure a feature behavior without changing the software version.
While parameters may be changed without changing the software version, parameter compatibility may not be
retained when the software version is changed . ([Link]
Connector and Pin Mapping
NOTE: Connectors in the sSAM can be backprobed without removing the connector.
