ETHICAL STANDARDS FOR THE TEACHING PROFESSION
The ethics of the teaching profession are the moral beliefs and rules about right and
wrong that influence teachers’ behaviours attitude and ideals.
WHAT ARE ETHICAL STANDARDS FOR THE TEACHING PROFESSION?
Ethical Standards are set of principles established by the founders of the organization
to communicate its underlying moral values. The code provides a framework to be
used as a reference for decision making, serving as collective guiding principles for
teacher preparation and practice in every country.
They establish the parameters of behaviour that teacher educators and other
stakeholders expect from trainee and practicing teachers.
In Ghana, the National Teaching Council (NTC) and Transforming Teacher Education
and Learning (T-TEL) ensure a lot of efforts are put in place to enforce these
standards in the teaching profession.
Examples of ethical professional standards are responsibility, honesty, transparency or
fairness.
THE PURPOSE OF THE ETHICAL STANDARD FOR THE TEACHING
PROFESSION
It inspires teachers to reflect and uphold the honour and dignity of the teaching
profession.
It helps to identify the ethical responsibilities and commitments in the teaching
profession.
It helps to promote public trust and confidence in the teaching profession.
THE ETHICAL STANDARDS FOR THE TEACHING PROFESSION ARE:
1. Care: The ethical standard of care in the teaching profession includes
compassion, interest, acceptance and insight for developing students’ potential.
2. Trust: The ethical standard of TRUST in the teaching profession expresses
fairness, openness and honesty.
3. Respect: Intrinsic to the ethical standards of RESPECT are trust and fair-
mindedness.
Teachers honour human dignity, emotional well-being and cognitive development.
DEFINITION OF ETHICAL VALUES
Ethical values are socially or culturally accepted standards and rules of behaviour.
Values refer to criteria to determine the level of integrity, worth or beauty. Value
education helps students find places in the world and build their self-confidence.
IMPORTANCE OF TEACHING ETHICAL VALUES IN SCHOOL
The National curriculum frame-work for education in most countries including
Ghana, placed importance on the need to develop qualities such as regularity,
punctuality, cleanliness, self-control, sincerity, sense of duty, desire to serve,
responsibility, enterprise, creativity, sensitivity to grater equality, value-based
Education promotes a thought-provoking and interactive environment for students
through the values.
