TOPIC OF INVESTIGATION
An investigation into the leadership style displayed by management at [Link] Library,
[Link] Bay, and its impact on employee performance and productivity.
OBJECTIVES
● To identify the leadership style displayed
● Gather information on how employees' performance and productivity are affected
by the leadership style
● Identify the advantages and disadvantages of the leadership style
● Offer possible solutions to help maximise performance and productivity
BACKGROUND
The role of a leader is very important to an organisation, so one can be guided
throughout their time in an orderly manner. The library was established on December 8,
1947, by Sir Ronald Adam, chairman of the British Council. In 1945, Nora Bateson's
“Library Plan for Jamaica” noted that a group in St. Ann’s Bay had been discussing the
prospects for a free library for the parish and were in correspondence with the Institute of
Jamaica on the matter. This group, led by Mr. and Mrs. G. Louis Byles, formally
launched the idea of St. Ann Public Libraries at a public meeting held in St. Ann’s Bay
on March 13, 1947.
Having leadership is important because it shows what one is capable of and helps
operate the business with independence and integrity. Leadership plays a crucial role in
business; without leadership, the organisation would not function properly. This is saying
that having leadership within an organisation and society creates better stability levels,
has effective communication and gets the work across without issues, brings more order
and regulations within the organisation, and can help with benefits from each other's
work when there is guidance.
METHODOLOGY
The method that the researchers used to gather information was the questionnaire. The
questionnaire was distributed to employees of JLS(Jamaica Library Service) and asked
about leadership styles displayed by management of the St. Ann's Bay parish library. A
total time of 10 minutes was given for employees to response to the questionnaire. The
questionnaire's purpose was to give employees the freedom to communicate their view on
the questions asked, without the interference of researchers or supervisors.
This, consequently did not allow researchers the opportunity to seek further insight or
get a better understanding of the response provided. The research was carried out with the
employees of St. Ann's Bay parish library and a sample size of 10 selected employees
was utilized. The results were recorded and presented using google forms. Additionally,
secondary data was obtained from other sources such as JIS, the library website and
business text books.
PRESENTATION AND ANALYSIS OF DATA
Fig.1
According to the pie chart above in Figure 1, 71.4% of respondents think that the library
practices democratic leadership, while 28.6% think that autocratic leadership is used
there.
Fig.2
Figure 2 shows, that different perspectives on the effectiveness of the management team's
leadership style are represented in the bar graph above. The majority voted in favour of
uncertainty, with the fewest voters disagreeing and a moderate in favour of agreement.
Fig.3
According to the above graph in Figure 3, 75% of employees feel that they have a say in
decisions made, 12.5% do not, and another 12.5% are unsure.
Fig. 4
As seen in Figure 4, 27.3% of workers believe that the management team effectively
empowers and motivates people, while 36.4% are unsure and another 36.4% disagree.
Fig. 5
The data shown in Figure 5 indicates that a sizable portion of the workforce, 63.6% agree
that the library management team supports staff members' prospects for professional
development, with 27.3% disagreeing and 9.1% unsure.
ANALYSIS OF DATA
The leadership style used at the library is displayed in Figure 1 as a pie chart. A majority
of workers, or 71.4%, believe that a democratic leadership style was used. Figure 2 goes
on to illustrate different viewpoints regarding the effectiveness of the employed
leadership style. With a few individuals in support of this leadership approach, the
majority were unsure. Most employees appear to feel more involved when a democratic
approach is used, as evidenced by Figure 3, where 75% of votes were in favour of this.
Nevertheless, this involvement does not seem to affect employee morale as the majority
voted against this, as shown in Figure 4 36.4% of employees do not feel empowered by
the leadership management team. However when asked if they believe the leadership
management team supports their professional development a great majority of 63.6%
voted in favour.
CONCLUSION
The findings from the investigation into the leadership style at the library reveals a
notable preference for a democratic leadership approach, with 71.4% of respondents
supports this style. While there are varying opinions on its effectiveness, the data clearly
shows that a majority of employees feel more engaged when a democratic approach is
utilized, with 75% of respondents in favor. However, this heightened level of
involvement doesn't necessarily translate to enhanced morale, as evidenced by the 36.4%
of employees who don't feel empowered by the leadership team. Nevertheless, a
significant majority (63.6%) believe that the leadership team supports their professional
growth. .
RECOMENDATION
The researchers came up with the following recommendations:
1. Democratic Leadership: Involve the staff in decision-making and activities that
would be pertinent in the retention of the same.
2. Morale Problems/Low sprits: Investigate the root of low morale and create an
enabling environment.
3. Professional Development- Investment in any opportunities related to training,
ensuring growth for employees and, in turn, an efficient organization.
