Bias in Knowledge Production Explored

The document discusses the inevitability of bias in knowledge production using a mirror as a metaphor for personal perspective. It emphasizes that biases shape how we perceive information and that recognizing these biases can lead to a deeper understanding of knowledge. The author encourages exploring different perspectives to mitigate the effects of bias.

TOK Exhibition:

TOK Prompt: 12 Is bias inevitable in the production of knowledge?

Word Count:

object 1: A mirror

Own photo of the student

The first object is a mirror that everyone uses daily. The mirror not only reflects an image but

also shows how the act of looking at oneself in the mirror creates one's unique perspective. When we l

ook at the mirror, we see only some part of ourselves that is shown in the mirror. What we can see in t

he mirror is very flat and has limited parts. This makes us also think inside the box, and observe only t

hings we can see in the mirror. Just as a mirror can distort information about an object in a way that is
different from what it appears to be, biases are inevitable in the process of information being interpret

ed and perceived by people. These biases are natural in our knowledge, as many things, even small on

es, naturally influence us. The mirror reflects how personal perspectives affect knowledge production.

According to Scientitfia, 2024, “Our previous experiences and knowledge of the world shape

not only our behavior but also how we perceive our environment.” Mirrors can also distort or selectiv

ely reflect certain views of reality. When one perspective becomes too powerful, it also can affects bia

s in the production of knowledge. It is important to know that a bias exists in knowledge, and we need

to question it. You can shift or even move the mirror to see things more clearly and from different per

spectives. If you try to see bias, you see it from different perspectives.

People naturally get biased in gaining knowledge. Realizing these biases does not mean that y

ou need to give up on your perspective and ideas, but it also helps to have better ideas of knowledge.

So instead of just standing in front of the mirror, we need to move the mirror or ourselves to see differ

ent sides of view.
