Axial Strength Analysis of Column EF

The document outlines a series of tasks related to the analysis of a structural frame, focusing on the effective length factor and axial compressive strengths of columns made from specific steel sections. It includes calculations for both LRFD and ASD design strengths for different column types under various loading conditions. Additionally, it presents a scenario involving combined axial and bending loads, requiring an assessment of design adequacy.

1. In the figure shown below, the frame is uninhibited against sidesway. The inertias of the beams show in the frame are
assumed to have values relative to the inertia, I, of the columns. Fy = 350 MPa.

Alignment Chart:

f) If the column EF is an HSS254x203.3x4.8 and is subject to both axial

compressive load and single curvature bending moments at its upper
and lower ends where PD = 250 kN and PL = 120 kN and at the upper
end the moments are MD = 18 kN-m and ML = 7 kN-m, at the lower end:
MD = 10 kN-m, ML = 5 kN-m. Assuming the frame is braced and using the
effective length method. Determine if the design is adequate.
