Homework
5/2/2024 Advance Steel Design (372207) 7
8th Assignment
1. Classify the types of steel stacks based on the construction and
explain it. Which criteria should we consider for stability of
chimney.
2. Calculate and list out the wind load acting on self-supporting stack
of height 70 m above foundation. The diameter of the cylindrical
part of the chimney is 3 m. The chimney is situated on almost flat
terrain with category 1 at Ahmedabad. Divide entire chimney into
sections of 7 m height to find out wind load.
3. Explain in detail Vertical and Horizontal Forces acting on Steel
Stack.

8th Assignment
4. Write the design steps of Self-supporting steel stacks.
5. Design a self supported steel chimney (neglect seismic forces)
having a height of 50 m using following data. Take average wind
pressure = 1.2 kN/m2
a) Diameter of steel stack-= 3 m
b) Diameter of flare = 4 m
c) Height of flare = 14 m
d) Thickness of fire brick lining = 100 mm
e) Corrosion allowance = 3 mm
