INSTRUCTIONS ON TAKING PICTURES USING
TOPCON TRC-50 SERIES RETINAL CAMERAS
WITH IMAGEnet SYSTEM
The following sets of instructions are intended to be used as a reference only. Keep in mind that
values may change depending on variables like: type of camera, illumination and patient conditions.
COLOR PICTURES USING THE
TOPCON TRC-50EX RETINAL CAMERA
WITH IMAGEnet SYSTEM
Retinal Camera Settings:
Auxiliary lens knob: 0 for normal retinas
- for high myopes
+ for aphakic patients w/o IOL
A for anterior chamber pictures
Barrier filter OFF
Filter knob “N”
Exciter filter OFF
Pupil size lever Middle position for normal
Lower position for small
Flash settings: 50 for normal retinas or anterior chamber.
75 for dark retinas
36 for albino retinas
It is always recommended to bracket one step up and one down when the photographer is
unsure of the type of retina.

INSTRUCTIONS TO PERFORM
FLUORESCEIN ANGIOGRAPHY WITH THE
TOPCON TRC-50EX RETINAL CAMERA
AND IMAGEnet SYSTEM
MATERIALS NEEDED:
Fluorescein: Use Sodium fluorescein (we recommend 25% made by Akorn) in vials of [Link] all
2.5cc in a bolus form in no more than two seconds. It is best to use 5cc syringes to facilitate injection
and 23 gauge Butterfly injection needles. With patients with very fragile veins, 25-gauge needle is
recommended.

PROCEDURE:
1. Open a Capture procedure for FA on IMAGEnet and click the clock on the capture bar to sync the
clock with the first shot.
2. Adjust the eyepiece to your vision by turning the eyepiece mount until the crosshairs in the center
are sharp and clear. You may place a white piece of paper in front of the lens to better see them.
Once this adjustment is performed, the eyepiece does not have to be re-adjusted, providing no
other operator will use the instrument.
3. Position the patient in front of the retinal camera in a comfortable manner. Place the head in the
chin rest and make sure that the forehead touches the upper bar, and the canthus of the eye is at
the same height of the black line on the side bar which holds the forehead rest.
4. With the filter knob in “N” (white light), align the eye by pulling the retinal camera head all the
way back and centering the pupil in the crosshairs. Then move in towards the patient until the
retinal image fills the view. At this point focus the retina using the focusing knob until the
structures are clear. You can also use the “Working Dots” at each side of the retinal image. When
they are sharp like small dots, the working distance is correct and you can focus the retina with
the focusing knob.
5. Turn the filter knob to “G” (green light / red-free filter) and using a flash power of 25 in the flash
power supply, take one or two red free pictures.
6. Recline the patient and perform venipuncture. When the needle is in the vein and good blood
return has been confirmed, place the patient’s head in the chin rest again. Re-check the focusing
using “N” (white light).
7. Press the Exciter filter button, and set the flash power to 200. (In very dark patients use 300) (You
may want to increase the power of the “Fluo” viewing light on the left side panel to # 7 in order to
see better the retina). Inject the fluorescein and immediately after injection, start the timer.
NOTE: In order to obtain good contrast and density, it is important to inject as fast as possible.
The injection must not last longer than 3 seconds. Otherwise, the fluorescein dilutes in the
bloodstream and when it reaches the eye does not have enough intensity to produce a good
image.
8. Take one picture every two seconds for the first 15 - 20 seconds. Have the patient rest and take
the needle out. (The Barrier filter will insert automatically in position every time you take a picture
and pull out after, for better viewing of the retina)
9. Take two or three more pictures of the recirculation phase and wait for about 7 to 10 minutes
before taking the late phase images.

SETTINGS FOR CAPTURING AUTO FLUORESCENCE IMAGES
USING THE TRC-50 DX/IA, THE AUTOFLUORESCENCE FILTER SET
AND IMAGEnet SYSTEM
1. GAIN ON THE MEGAPLUS ES-3200 CAMERA: 16
2. FLASH POWER: 300WS
3. GAMMA: 1.2 OR 1.3
4. SMALL PUPIL: ON
Note: In case the patient has incipient cataracts, reduce the Gamma to 1.0 or 0.9 and the flash to
200WS
INSTRUCTIONS TO SET AUTO FLASH INTENSITIES IN THE
TOPCON TRC-50EX RETINAL CAMERA
1. Turn retinal camera on.
2. Set the “Exposure Setting” switch in “Program Mode” (position 2).
3. Select the filter position you wish to set.
4. Select the flash intensity you wish to set.
5. Press both up and down arrows for flash intensity (at the left of flash intensity bar) at the same
time until camera beeps five times rapidly. The camera is now programmed to default to that flash
intensity every time you select that filter. Even though the instrument will default to that flash
intensity, you can further modify it, in the same way you will for manual mode.
6. To change settings, repeat from step 3.
Suggested settings for film.
