SECTION B: THEORY (40 marks)
Answer 3 questions only. Question 2 is compulsory.

1. a) What's a "set"? Give an example of a set of your favorite fruits, and then make a
different set of colors those fruits might be.
b) Imagine a triangle with one angle that's exactly 90 degrees (a right-angled triangle). You
have the sides called the Opposite, Adjacent, and Hypotenuse. You can make sets using
those sides in combination to form different trigonometric ratios. Explain how to construct the
sets to represent Sine and Cosine.​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ (10 marks)

2. a) If U = {1,2,3,4,5}, A = { 1,3} and B= { 3,4}, Find (i) Aʼ (ii) Bʼ (iii) (AnB)ʼ (iv) (AUB)ʼ
b) In a group of 120 students, 60 studied mathematics, 40 studied physics, 55 studied
Chemistry and 22 studied none of the three subjects. 12 studied physics and mathematics
only, 8 studied chemistry and physics only, 7 studied mathematics and chemistry only.
i) Draw a venn diagram illustrating the information
ii) Find the number of students that studied all three subjects
iii) Find the number of students that studied only mathematics​ ​ (20 marks)

3. a) Solve this quadratic equation: x² + 5x + 6 = 0


b) A tree casts a shadow of 12 meters long on the ground. If the angle between the sun's
rays and the ground is 40°, what is the height of the tree?
c) A staircase rises 4 meters vertically and runs 6 meters horizontally. What angle does the
staircase make with the ground?​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ (10 marks)

4. a) What's a "statement" in logic? Give an example of a TRUE statement about your


favorite subject in school, and then give an example of a FALSE statement.
b) Suppose I say, "All the students in the Math Club are good at solving puzzles." What if I
point to someone not in the Math Club? What can you say, or not say, about whether they're

5. a) Is it true that if a person works hard, they will always be rich? Explain your reasoning,
use "if-then" statements in your answer, and provide any counterexamples.

c) Can you have a triangle where all angles are acute (less than 90 degrees) or all angles
are obtuse(more than 90 degrees but less than 180 degrees)? Explain your reasoning.​
