Introduction
Introduction
Structured cabling in accordance with ISO / IEC 11801-1 has long since grown beyond pure office ca-bling and is
increasingly replacing proprietary data transmission protocols, which are primarily designed for the control and net-
working of production infrastructure.
The tougher operating environment for such applications, which field buses counter with higher de-mands on the
cabling components, is also taken into account in structured cabling. ISO / IEC 11801-1, Chapter 6.2.2 describes
and defines these higher requirements in what is referred to as the MICE table:

environment
The values in Class 1 (MICE 1) correspond to the requirements for office cabling according to ISO/IEC 11801-2 or
the corresponding EN 50173-2 standard and thus the environment in which R&M has im-plemented the majority of
projects to date. The operating conditions according to “MICE 1” are also the domain of mix & match products, as
only transmission specifications are relevant.
Products used under the “MICE 2” and “MICE 3” operating conditions sometimes require particularly ro-bust tech-
nologies (e.g. IDC contacting, IP protection measures, mechanical reinforcements) and gener-ally higher resistance
to gases and liquids in the operating environment.
The higher demands on the robustness of network components in the non-office environment are aimed at maintai-
ning reliability in operation and minimizing downtime.

Influence categories M (mechanical influences), I (ingress of solids and moisture), C (climatic influences) and E (elec-
tromagnetic influences) are further subdivided. The specifications for the three classes are listed for each possible
influencing parameter.
Mechanical influences (M)
Mechanical influences directly affect the material structure of the components, their construction and their joints
Mechanical influences lead to deformations and generate contact losses.

Climate and chemical influences (C)
Thermal (operating temperature, change of temperature) and chemical influences (gases, liquids, fungi) influence the
materials both externally (brittleness) and internally (e.g. degree of crystallization of plastics).
Cables or connectors are products the construction of which is a combination of materials (e.g. cables: copper or
glass as a conductive medium, plastic as a sheath material). Due to the different temperature expansion coefficients
of the materials, there may be an influence due to material stresses in the com-ponents that should not be unde-
restimated.
Chemical fluids act on the outer materials of cables, connectors and distributors. Chemical gases penetrate the com-
ponents and can corrode interfaces and cause data interruptions or short circuits.

Definition of MICE requirements for cabling components
As the complexity of the MICE requirements – which could theoretically be defined as an M1I2C1E3 con-nector – is
difficult to implement in practice, the subdivision into MICE 1, MICE 2 and MICE 3 zones has established itself to
simplify matters. This is not 100 % correct, but at least practicable:

Recommendations
Recommendations
MICE 1 MICE 2 MICE 3
“MICE 3” requirements are generally not necessary in closed production halls; outdoor applications, off-shore ap-
plications or data cabling in heavy industry (e.g. steel production) will certainly have require-ments that correspond
to the “MICE 3” level in some cases.
