3y
b) given A = (58 42) , B = ( xy ) and C = (−32 ) Solve the matrix AXB = C
log 125
2. simplify log 25
3/ 4 0 3 /2
32 X 16 X 8
3. evaluate 3/2

4. Solve the equation for x: x2 + 11 = 7
5. Solve the simultaneous equation:
xy = 10
3y + 2y = 16
6. Express: 1 + 3 in the form a + bc.

7. (i) Simplify: ( 81 )
( 16 )
(ii) Solve the equation for:x 2x2 = 16x-1
b) Without using tables show that:
log27 + log8 - 125 = 3
log6 – log5 2
8. The data in the table below shows the heights of s.5 students at Mpoma royal college.
Height (cm) 150 - 154 155 – 159 160 – 164 165 -

9. Three ladies P, Q and R went for shopping. P bought 2 kg of sugar, 4 kg of tea and 1
1
loaf of bread; Q bought 10 kg of sugar, 2 kg of tea and 2 loaves of bread; R bought 5
1
kg of sugar, 4 kg of tea and 1 loaf of bread. Write this information in the form of a 3
× 3 matrix.
The prices are: Sugar sh. 1,500 per kg, tea sh. 2,000 per kg and sh. 1,000 for one loaf of bread.
Use matrix multiplication to find the total amount of money spent by each of P, Q and R. Label
rows and columns of your answer to indicate what the entries represent
10. Below are marks scored by S.6 students of a certain school in an end of term 1, 2013
sub- mathematics examination.
19 20 31 72 40 39 35 32
45 21 13 51 77 15 19 64
10 50 62 40 19 20 27 37

(a) (i) Form a frequency distribution table consisting of classes of equal width,
starting with 10 – 19 as the first class.
(ii) Using 44.5 as your assumed mean. Calculate the mean mark of the
students.
(b) Draw a histogram to represent the marks of the students and use it to estimate the
modal mark.
11. A certain construction company imports cement every year. Four different types
of cement are imported, namely, Bambuuri, Tanga, Hima and white cement.
The quantities ordered are in the ratio [Link] respectively.
The price in dollars per bag for the year 2008, 2009 and 2010 are shown in the
table below.
Content 2008 2009 2010 Weight
Price ($) Price ($) Price ($)
Bamboo 13.15 13.75 13.95 13
Tanga 12.60 12.80 13.05 11
Him 15.80 16.02 16.20 9
White Cement 16.95 16.99 17.04 7
Using 2008, as the base years, determine:
(i) The price relative of each item for 2009 and 2010.
(ii) The single aggregate price index for 2009.
(iii) The weighted aggregate price index for 2010.
12. (a) Three coins are tossed simultaneously once.
Find the probability of getting:
(i) three heads
(ii) at least two heads
(iii) two tails
(b) Events A and B are such that P(A) = 0.36; P(B) = 0. 25 P(A ∩ B’) = 0.24
Find the value of:
(i) P(A’ ∩ B) (ii) P P(‘A ∩ B) (iii) P(A’ ∩ B’)
(iv) P(A’ U B’ )
