Geotechnical Engineering Design CENG 405-Assignment 1 PDF

The document outlines an assignment for a Geotechnical Engineering course, focusing on two questions related to calculating the factor of safety for slopes using different methods. Question 1 involves analyzing a compacted fill and embankment over hard shale, while Question 2 requires the use of the Fellenius method for a slope with specified soil parameters. Both questions emphasize the importance of effective stress and pore pressure in geotechnical design.

Geotechnical Engineering Design CENG 405 Assignment 1
Due Date: 2 December 2024

Question 1
Figure 1 shows a section through a site in which the compacted fill is laid to a depth of 2.45m
and then an embankment 8m high is placed on top. The underlying soil is a hard shale. At the
end of construction, the properties of the compacted fill are  = 18.62kN / m3 , c=25kN/m2, and
Φ=28 o. The pore pressure ratio ru=0.5. Calculate the factor of safety for the slip circle shown.
Comment on the results obtained. Use the Swedish method of slices. Divide the soil into 8
slices.

Question 2
Using the Fellenius method of slices, determine the factor of safety, in terms of effective
stress, of the slope shown in Figure 2 for the given failure surface using peak strength
parameters c = 10kN / m 2 and   = 29 . The unit weight of the soil both above and below the
water table is 20kN/m3. The water table is at 3m below the crest of the slope.
