SECTION B
3. Read the following passage and answer the questions that follows.
Kondwani learned at Plumbi Primary School. It was far from Kasungu Township. One morning the
headteacher of the school said, “There will be a National Cross-Country in Kasungu next month”.

Kondwani went home and meet Sibo, the wiseman he told him about the race. “I want to be the fastest
runner in the school’’ he said ‘’ I need some magic to help me ‘’ The wiseman gave Kondwani a necklace to
wear around his neck. ‘’it is full of magic to you to make strong, get up at five o’clock every morning run to
big Tarmark road and back before the sun rises, ‘’ The wiseman advised him.
The following morning, he ran to the Tarmark road. It was along ways, his legs ached. His feet had sores;
He ran back to the village before sun had risen. He repeated this for many days.
The day of the race at his school came. It was a big race. His two friends ahead of him got tired and he
passed them. I have won. ‘’I am going to Kasungu’’

Kondwani went back to the wiseman ‘’Will the magic work in Kasungu?’’ ‘’yes.’’ Subo said. Wake up at
four o’clock run the road and back twice before sun rises. ‘’ Although it was dark, Kondwani run.’’ The
magic grew stronger.

As the day to go to Kasungu approached his father gave him K500 to buy food. Kondwani could not sleep
he was excited and happy. He travelled by minibus to Kasungu where he met other runners. A strange man
welcomed him. He told them that the winner would go to Tanzania for Africa Cross-Country Championship.
‘’I have my magic necklace, I must win’’ Kondwani thought.

The following morning, he came across three stranger men who took away K500 his father had given him.
They also took away the necklace. Kondwani lost the hope of running. As they started the race his legs
growing stronger and stronger. He ran faster and faster. He saw a finishing ahead of him and he came first.
He realised that his success was due to frequent practices and not the necklace. It was announced that
Kondwani Chimwaza would fly to Tanzania.
