STP FEASIBILITY REPORT

INTRODUCTION

M/s. Bagmane Developers Pvt. Ltd. is proposing to construct a commercial building namely
‘XENON’ for IT/ITES clients with the total built-up area of 1,49,475.90 sqm. (i.e.,
16,08,945.20 sqft.) at Bangalore, Karnataka. The building (office complex) comprises of 2
blocks as NORTH WING and SOUTH WING with 3 common basements under each block,
ground floor, 7 upper floors and terrace. The approximate height of the building (from
external Ground/Road level) is 32 meter.

They propose to set up a water pollution control and re-use system for the wastewater
generated from the development. The only sources of wastewater are from toilets, kitchen
etc., in the complex and therefore domestic in nature.

This report details the collection, treatment and reuse of domestic effluents from the
proposed facility.

TOTAL 9,888 188.77 229.23 418.00 376.20

NOTE:
The average per capita demand of 45 LPCD accounts to an overall demand of 4,18,000
litres (418.00 cum/day). Out of 45 LPCD, 25 LPCD is for domestic requirements and further
water for flushing @ 20 LPCD is fed from STP reclaimed water.

From the above demand, about 90% of water converts into sewage which amounts to
3,76,200 litres (376.20 cum/day). Hence a Sewage Treatment Plant of capacity 375 KLD
would be required. However, based on confirmation from BDPL (Builder), Sewage
Treatment Plant of capacity 500 KLD is proposed to take care of shock loads and also to
keep the electro mechanical systems modular.

STP FEASIBILITY REPORT

A. BAR SCREEN
In the incoming channel, a chamber medium screen shall be fitted, the purpose of
which is to filter out coarse trashy matter from introducing into succeeding units of
the treatment plant. Screens shall be made of M.S Construction with Epoxy Painted.
Provide a Chamber of size 0.6 X 0.6 X 0.6 mts

vegetable wastes, leaves, cotton waste etc., and have to be cleaned by hand rake.
These screenings should be collected & disposed off as solid waste. It is proposed to
construct manually cleaned Bar Screen Chamber of size as per design requirement.
Type of screen : M.S Construction manually cleaned a bar screen of 20 x 6 mm flats
with 10mm spacing in between as coarse bar screen.

B. EQUALISATION TANK / COLLECTION TANK

The flow from the bar screen chamber is let into the equalization tank. The tank acts
as a holding tank for the raw effluents. In order to homogenize the quality of
wastewater, as well as to feed wastewater at a uniform rate to the rest of the
treatment plant, an equalization tank is proposed. In order to mix the contents, as
well as to provide a degree of preparation, diffused aeration by means of membranes
and blowers are proposed.

Flow : 500,000 Lt/day

Average flow : 20 hours
Say : 25 Lt/day
Provide Equalization Tank with a HRT of 8.0 Hours (holding capacity)
Capacity : 200 m3

Provide a tank of 2,00,000 Lt. Capacity.

C. SEQUENCING BATCH REACTOR TANK

A sequencing batch reactor (SBR) is a fill – and – draw activated – sludge treatment
system. The unit processes involved in the SBR and conventional activated – sludge
systems are identical. Aeration and sedimentation /clarification are carried out in
both systems. However, there is one important difference, in conventional plants; the
processes are carried out simultaneously in separate tanks, whereas in SBR operation
the processes are carried out sequentially in the same tank.
SBR systems have five steps in common that are carried out in sequence as follows:
a) Fill
PROJECT NAME: BAGMANE XENON Sheet 4 of 17
Rev 00
STP FEASIBILITY REPORT

b) React (aeration)
c) Settle (sedimentation/clarification)
d) Draw (decant)
e) Idle

SBR will act as an Activated Sludge Process for developing the bacterial culture,
which stabilizes the waste using submerged aerators. The SBR will also act as
Secondary clarifier during the settle process and as a pre-filtration tank during the
decant phase. During the decant phase only the supernatant is removed from the
reactor and taken up for tertiary treatment.

a) Design for each module

Flow = 500 KLD.

BOD after treatment <10 mg/ltr

Assumption:
F/M ratio = 0.10
MLSS = 8000 mg/L when tank is full
Total BOD load = 175 kg/day
No of Reactors = 2 Nos
No of Cycles per reactor = 3 Nos
Decant Fraction of Aeration Tank = 35%
Fill Volume Per Batch = 125 Cum
Volume of Each Reactor = 250 Cum
Recommended Volume of Each Reactor = 250 Cum
Over All volume of SBR = 250 Cum
Hence provide SBR tank of capacity 250000 liters capacity in two tanks

Calculation of Air Volume

"BOD5 after treatment <10 mg/lit

"BOD5 Loading = 350 mg/lit
"Total BOD5 load = 750 x 1000x 350kg/day
1000000
"Total BOD5 load = 175 kg/day
BOD5 load in Kg/day in the aeration tank = 175 Kg
Oxygen required in Kg/day = 437.50 kg/day
(2.5 kgs of Oxygen is required for every Kg of BOD5 to be removed)
% of Oxygen in air = 0.21
Density of air = 1.2
Total Air Required per day = 2609 m3/day
Consider 20% excess assuming air requirement in the equalization tank.
Total air required = 3130 cum /day.
Transfer rate of oxygen in 1 mt. Long membrane diffusers = 10 Cum /hr.

Pressure Sand Filter:

Air Blowers
BOD Load Sequencing/ Aeration tank =500 KLD X 350 mg/l
= 175 kg /day
(2 kgs of Oxygen is required for every kg of BOD removed)

Oxygen required in Kg /day = 175 X 2 = 350 kg/day

% of Oxygen in air = 0.21

Density of air = 1.2
No of Hours of oxygenation = 12 Hrs
Air Requirement = 17.36 m3 of 02 / Hr.
Diffuser Efficiency = 18%
For Air requirement, = 525.0 m3 / Hr
(12 x 0.21x 1.2 x 18%)
Therefore air requirement for Aeration tank = 964 m3 / Hr
Air requirement for EQT, SHT and TWT = 30 m3 / Hr
Therefore Total Air Requirement = 994 m3 /Hr @ 0.5 kg/cm2

Hence Provide Air Blowers of capacity 1000 m3/Hr with 5000MMWG Pressure.

D. DECANT TANK

The decant water from SBR tank is expected to meet the standards with respect to
BOD and COD for discharge to on land irrigation, however to improve the quality of
the treated water for reuse, further tertiary treatment is provided in the form of
filtration, Ultrafiltration, UV Sterilization, chlorine disinfection.

Design of decant tank :

Flow : 500KLD
BOD After treatment : <10 mg/l
Total BOD load : 500 KLD*350mg/l
: 175 kg/day
Assumption :
F/M ratio : 0.10
MLSS : 4000 mg/l
F/M : Q*BOD/V*MLSS

Hence required volume of Aeration tank = 492.18 KLD.

Decant fraction of aeration tank : 50%
Provide volume of Decant tank = 246 cum
Dimensions of Decant tank = 10m X 6.2m X 4m .

TERTIARY TREATMENT SYSTEMS:

The wastewater after biological treatment still contains some solids, colour, odour and
harmful micro-organisms. The pressure sand filter and activated carbon filter are used to
remove the solids and colour. The disinfection process is used to remove the micro-
organisms and odour.

1) PRESSURE SAND FILTER

The Treated Effluent from the Decant Tank is pumped to pressure sand filter to remove the
suspended solids. This is a pressure vessel equipped with a perforated under drain plate /
Internal laterals, filter media comprises of graded filter gravel/sand.

Pressure sand filter with various grades of pebbles and sand media helps in the removal of

residual suspended solids. The filter will be operating in the pressure range of 3-3.5 kg/cm2.

Design flow = 53.5 m3/hr (considering 14 hr/day of operations of PSF)

The recommended PSF dimension is 2.4 m dia in 2 nos and height 1.8 m. Suitable designed
backwashing system is adopted.

The filtered water comes out of pressure sand filter and is led to Activated Carbon Filter.
Filter feed pumps are provided for the purpose. Backwash system is provided for
backwashing the filters.

Flow = 750000 Lt/day

Loading rate = 12 Cum/ Sqm. /Hr
Considering the operation of 18 hours of filter
Provide a Pressure Sand filter of 1500 mm dia x 2 Nos with sand as media over layer, under
drainpipe, laterals face piping etc.,

2) ACTIVATED CARBON FILTER

The Filtered Water from the Pressure Sand Filter Passes through an Activated Carbon Filter,
which comprises of vertical pressure vessel, equipped with perforated under drain plate with
polystyrene strainers / Internal laterals, filter media comprising Activated Carbon over a bed
of graded gravel, to remove the color and odour of the treated wastewater.

The recommended ACF dimension is 2.4 m dia in 2 nos and height 1.8 m. Suitable designed
backwashing system is adopted.

Activated Carbon Filter:

Flow = 500,000 liter/day

Loading rate = 12 Cum/Sqm/hr.

Considering the operation of 18 hours of filter

Provide an Activated carbon filter of 1500 mm x 2 Nos diameter with activated carbon filter
media with under drainpipe, lateral face piping.

3) SOFTENER

A part of the filtered water from the outlet of the Activated Carbon Filter passes through a
Softener, which comprises of vertical pressure vessel, equipped with perforated under drain

STP FEASIBILITY REPORT

plate with polystyrene strainers / Internal laterals, filter media comprising Ion Exchange
resin over a bed of graded gravel, to reduce the hardness in the water.

4) CHLORINATOR

Chlorination of treated effluent after filtration is provided for disinfection. Sodium

Hypochlorite is used as disinfectant for treated wastewater. This is available in solution form
with 12% to 15% of chlorine. Contact period of 15 to 30 min is specified with minimum
chlorine residual to keep the coliform count under control.

Hence provide 300 - 400 Lt Tank with 4 - 10 LPH dosing Pump and required dosing can be
adjusted as per requirement.

5) ULTRAFILTRATION SYSTEM

Ultra-filtration membrane shall remove the colloidal & particulate matter (Reduces turbidity)

from STP Treated water thus bringing down the BOD=< 5PPM and when further passed with
the RO system, it removes TDS in STP Treated water and produces good quality drinking
water.

6) FINAL TREATED WATER HOLDING TANK – 450 KLD (90% of STP)

It is envisaged to provide two separate tanks for following functions:
1) Holding tank 1 – Treated water for HVAC applications (Cooling towers / Chillers)
Dimensions: 10m X 5.0 m X 4.0 m
2) Holding tank 2 – Combined application for flushing of water closets and landscaping.
Dimensions: 9 m X 7 m X 4.0 m

7) SLUDGE HOLDING TANK

Excess sludge from the SBR tank is collected in Sludge Holding Tank, which is provided with
course bubble diffusers to thicken the sludge, and the same is pumped through filter press
for dewatering by means of Screw Pump.

Filter Press: Thickened sludge from Sludge Holding Tank is pumped to filter press to dewater
the sludge and to form a cake. The cake will be removed on to a tray and will be disposed as
manure or carted out. Filtrate will be diverted to Equalization tank.

Sludge production is generally 15% of the total STP plant capacity

Thus the sludge produced = 500 X 0.15 = 75 KLD

Volume of the sludge holding tank = 75 KLD 6 m X 3.125 m X 4 m

Dimension of the sludge holding tank = 6 m X 3.125 m X 4 m

RAINWATER HARVESTING:
Rainwater harvesting is the accumulation and deposition of rainwater for reuse on-site,
rather than allowing it to run off. Rainwater is collected from roofs and directed for
domestic use after required treatment, whereas the storm water gets collected and
percolates via recharge pits for groundwater recharge.

1. Roof Top Rain Water

2. Surface Rainwater (i.e. Roads, Landscape etc.,)

❖ All vertical rain water pipes from terrace floor will discharge the rainwater to
header pipe & finally connects to rain water harvesting reservoir. However, first
wash of rainwater shall be diverted to storm water drainage by considering
control valve & piping arrangement before rain water harvesting tank.

❖ All vertical down takes are designed for an intensity of 60 mm/hr considering
maximum rainfall intensity in last 50 years. (For 30 min. storm duration).

❖ The location of rain water collection reservoir shall be close to the building as per
the site gradient. Water from rain water collection reservoir (located adjacent to
domestic tanks) shall overflow into raw water tank which will be passed through
water treatment systems (multi-grade filter, softener and chlorine disinfection) &
augmented in treated water reservoir. Thus, collected rain water shall cater to
domestic needs during monsoon days.

❖ The over flow from the rain water collection reservoir shall be connected to
external storm water drain.

❖ It is proposed to have peripheral RCC box drains along the periphery of the
compound wall to collect and convey surface run off into the external drain.

❖ This network of drain shall be connected to deep recharge pits of suitable size
(Quantity as per the requirement) with necessary interceptors, for maximum
recharge of ground water table.

❖ Rainwater from balconies, connecting corridors & refuge floors shall be taken in
separate shaft and conveyed into external storm water network.
