Discipline: The discipline designated to our group is "Economics" What is it about?
Well Economics is a social science that focuses on the creation, consumption and
transfer of wealth. It is the study of how groups of individuals make decisions about
the allocation of scarce resources. It's goal is to understand the market and economy
of a country. We would like to add "Marxian Economics" as it is connected to our
material. When we say "Marxism" it is the social and economic theory developed by
Karl Marx that focuses on the labor and development of an economy.
Material: The material we chose for our presentation is "The Potato Eaters", a painting
by Vincent Willem Van Gogh during the Post- Impressionism Period. It is an artwork
wherein he showcased his experience with the people in Nuenen Netherlands in the
year 1884. This artwork shows the daily struggles faced by the laborers. Even though
it was one of the most hated artwork by Van Gogh it is actually one of the best
example and material to be used in our discipline which is "Economics" because the
artwork shows the economic struggles of the people during the post impressionism
period. Specifically "Marxian Economics" which is the theory of Karl Marx that
analyzes the impact of the ruling class to the laborers. In simple terms Marxism is
about how money impacts the economy.
School Of Thought: The school of thought related to the topic is "Interpretivism".
Interpretivism is associated with the philosophical position of idealism, and is used to
group together diverse approaches, including social constructivism, phenomenology
and hermeneutics which are approaches that reject the objectivist view that meaning
resides within the world independently of [Link] connection of
Interpretivism and “The Potato Eaters” by Van Gogh is how he gives contextualization
and perception towards the depiction of his art piece. He gave life into his painting to
show, to interpret the underlying problems of the poor.
