WAS40P
Watch Alarm System
Functional Description

3 Watch Alarm
The watch alarm system can be switched ON and OFF by means of a lockable
switch or input on X1.18. The OFF state does not begin until 1 minute after the
lockable switch is set to OFF. During this time, a different time setting and different
cabins can be selected. If all cabins are deselected here, the 1st cabin (master) is
activated when switching ON occurs. It is possible by parameter to blocked the 1st
cabin (master couldn’t deactivated). In the OFF state, all displays are dark and any
activated alarm outputs are reset. The system monitoring function and thus the
system fault output (X1.10-11) are active even in the OFF state.

When the unit is switched on by means of the lockable switch, all operating
elements are illuminated from behind, the preselected time is displayed (green LED
in the time key) and the green LED of the selected cabin flashes. If the selection
is accepted on the cabin panel by means of the acknowledgement key, the green
LED changes over to continuous illumination. If the alarm reset is not performed
on the unit within the selected time ( t-30 sec.) by operation of a key (and then
releasing of the key again), or by operation of other connected units (e.g. BAS40P)
or with one of the external acknowledgement-keys, then a preliminary alarm is
given by flashing of the lamps in all connected acknowledgement keys and the time
LED on the WAS40P. After a further 5 seconds have passed without
acknowledgement, then the internal buzzer, the red LED 9 and the external
buzzers in the reset panels are activated. If the system is not reset with one of the
acknowledgement keys, then the subsequent alarm processes occur in the
following steps. 25 seconds after the buzzers, the collective alarm (X1.12-13), as
well as the buzzers and the alarm LED's in the selected cabin panels, are
activated. The alarm cannot be reset on the cabin panels. After a further 30
seconds, the general alarm (X1.14-15) follows.
Via the input X2.21, the watch alarm can be triggered immediately, i.e. the
collective alarm and the selected cabin-alarms occur immediately. The general
alarm follows after 30 seconds unless resetting (acknowledgement) takes place
before that.
The times above are used if time program 1 are selected.

4 Officer’s Call
The officer's call system of the WAS40P is active in the ON state only. By
operation of the relevant key, a call can be sent to all cabins or to a particular one.
On the WAS40P, the red LED of the called cabin flashes, and on the cabin panel
the alarm LED and the buzzer are activated intermittently until an
acknowledgement takes place on the cabin panel or the call is withdrawn by
operation of the call key again.

WAS40P
Watch Alarm System
Functional Description

5 External Alarm
An external alarm that is present at X2.20 is signalled by the red flashing LED 18.
After 5 second the internal buzzer are activated. If this alarm is not acknowledged
within a further 25 seconds by means of the key K18, it is passed on to the
selected officer, and the collected alarm (X1.12-13) is output. The general alarm
(X1.14-15) follows after a further 30 seconds. If the alarm is acknowledged, it is
displayed by continuous illumination for as long as it is present. If this alarm comes
from a BAS40P, the acknowledgement key (K18) acoustically acknowledges the
alarm there too.
The delay times are the same as the times at the watch alarm function.

6 WAS Disabled
If a voltage of +24 V is applied to the input X1.8, the system is disabled. In this
mode, the outputs for the reset panels and cabin panels, the general alarm and the
collective alarm are not active. The visual display goes off, and only the
background illumination continues to run, but at the lowest dimming level. The only
operating element that is active is the lockable switch (the unit can be switched off).

7 Dimming / Lamp Test

The dimming level is adjusted by means of two dimming keys. Three dimming
levels can be selected. Each of these dimming levels can be set in 16 steps via
parameters. Dimming can also take place via a BAS40M connected to the Syn-IO
line (X1.8).

The lamp test is activated for 3 seconds by operation of the two dimming keys. In
the lamp test, all red and green corner-LED's and the entire background
illumination light up. Because the red and green corner-LED's light up, they appear
yellow.

8 Lockable Switch OFF

The watch alarm system can be switched ON and OFF by means of the lockable
switch. The OFF state does not begin until 1 minute after the lockable switch is set
to OFF. The position of the lockable switch appears without delay on the output
X1.18 (OFF = 24V). This signal could use for the input ‘harbour mode’ on the
bridge alarm system.

9 Extern OFF
The watch alarm system can be switched ON and OFF by the input X1.18 (OFF =
24V) without delay. It is not possible to select a different time setting or different
cabin at this funktion.

10.3 Adjustment of the Dimming Levels

By means of the cursor keys, the dimming value can be changed in accordance
with the selected dimming level (parameter function).
The dimming value concerned (0..15) is indicated with the LED's in the left-hand
column of keys.

LED1 Value 8
LED6 Value 4
LED11 Value 2
LED16 Value 1

For example, K1 = on, K6 = off, K11 = on, K16 = on corresponds to the value 11
(8 + 0 + 2 + 1 = 11).

10.4 Selectable Officers

With this function, it is possible to specify which officers' cabins (duty officers) can
be selected or called. The green LED's in the keys K6, K7, K11, K12, K16 and K17
indicate which officers (cabins) can be selected. By operation of the relevant key,
its status toggles between "selectable" (LED = green) and "not selectable" (LED
= off). An exception is the 1st cabin with the key K1. This key knows only the two
states "selectable" (LED = green) and "always selected" (LED = yellow).

10.5 Watch Preliminary Alarm on X1.22

LED 3 = red indicate that the watch preliminary alarm is output on X1.22.
LED 3 = green indicate that on X1.22 a fourth ‘RESET line’ could be connect.
Each operation of key 3 will toggle between the two states.

10.6 Alarm Delay Times

The optical alarm time could select by key 3 and will be indicate by LED 3. The
times for acoustical and optical alarm could select by key 8 and will indicate by LED
8. For selection and indication of the general alarm time key 13 and LED 13 will
use. The selected time will be displayed by the green LED’s of the three left rows.
In this function of parameterisation the keys K16, K17 and K18 are identified as
operating elements by the background illumination. The background illumination
of the selected row are off. The selected time digit could be changed by K14 and
K19.

12 Appendix for Operation with Automatic Mode Selector Switch

Recommend by the IMO Regulation MSC.128(75) the Bridge Navigational
Watch Alarm System should be operational whenever the ship’s heading or track
control system is engaged, unless inhibited by the master.

Following operational modes are required:

- Manual OFF (Does not operate under any circumstances)

- Manual ON (In operation constantly)
- AUTOMATIC (Automatically brought into operation when ever the ship’s
heading or track control system is activated)

For fulfilment of this requirement the function of the WAP has to be extended
with an Automatic Mode Selector Switch.
The Automatic Mode Selector Switch is also key operated (the same key as for
the ON/OFF switch of the WAP is used). The switch is flush mounted, details:
SAM Id. no. 271. 257 998 / Key switch, round, Euro Locks

Principle of operation - Watch Alarm Panel with Automatic Mode

Selector Switch:

Master ON/OFF switch is the key operated switch at the WAP.

- If this is OFF the system is off.

- If this is ON the operation is dependent on the Automatic Mode Selector
Switch.
- If the AMS switch is open, the WAP is always ON. (Standard Mode)
- If the AMS switch is closed, the WAP is ON only when autopilot is selected.
(Auto Mode)

Electrical Description:

+24V at terminal X1-18 of WAP switches the WAP off.

A 24V DC relay is required when the contact at the steering mode selector is
closed when autopilot is active.
If there is a contact at the steering mode selector that is always closed and only
opened when autopilot is selected, the +24V can be routed direct via the contact
at the steering mode selector.

Common questions

Powered by AI

When an alarm is unacknowledged, the WAS40P system initiates a series of steps. Initially, a preliminary alarm is indicated by flashing lamps in all connected panels. After 5 seconds without acknowledgement, the internal and external buzzers are activated. If not reset within an additional 25 seconds, the collective alarm is triggered, activating buzzers and alarm LEDs in selected cabins. The general alarm follows after another 30 seconds unless an acknowledgement occurs .

The lockable switch plays a crucial role in the operation of the WAS40P Watch Alarm System by controlling the system's power state. It allows the system to be turned ON or OFF, with the OFF state initiating a 1-minute delay before actually shutting down. This delay provides an opportunity to select different time settings or cabins. In addition, the lockable switch is used for configuring the system by starting the parameterisation process when set to OFF .

The primary function of the WAS40P Watch Alarm System is to perform both as a Watch Alarm and an Officer's Call System. It interacts with other systems on the ship by allowing joint dimming with other panels like BAS40M and enabling the alarm signals to be transferred to selected cabin panels. It can also pass alarms to the BAS40P for mode switching between harbour and sea, and the system state can be indicated externally via lockable switches .

The 'Dimming / Lamp Test' process in the WAS40P system is important for optimizing visibility and performing routine checks. Dimming is adjusted using two keys, offering three levels, each selectable in 16 increments. This feature allows the lighting to be tailored to different ambient conditions, enhancing visibility and operator comfort. The lamp test is performed by simultaneously pressing the dimming keys, whereby all LEDs and background illumination light up for 3 seconds. This test is crucial for ensuring that all visual indicators are functioning properly, which is essential for the effective performance of the alarm system .

The officer's call function in the WAS40P system allows for direct communication to cabin panels. This feature is active only when the system is ON. By using the relevant key, a call is sent to all cabins or to a specific cabin, activating the alarm LED and buzzer on the cabin panel. The red LED on the WAS40P indicates which cabin is called. This function is significant because it allows for direct, real-time notifications to duty officers, ensuring that necessary actions are taken swiftly in the event of an alarm or other operational requirements .

The WAS40P system handles external alarms by activating a sequence of notifications. When an external alarm is detected, it triggers a flashing LED and after 5 seconds, activates the internal buzzer. If the alarm is not acknowledged within 25 seconds, it is escalated to the selected officer with the collective alarm activated. A general alarm follows after another 30 seconds if still unacknowledged. This process ensures comprehensive coverage and response to external alerts, critical for maintaining vessel safety .

Parameter selection in the WAS40P system is critical for customizing its configuration and operation to suit specific shipboard requirements. It is executed by setting the lockable switch to 'OFF' and within 10 seconds, simultaneously operating keys K18 and K19. This initiates the parameterisation mode, allowing the user to adjust dimming levels, alarm delay times, and watch intervals. Such flexibility in parameterisation ensures the system can be tailored to varying operational conditions, improving its effectiveness and safety compliance .

The WAS40P Watch Alarm System ensures continuous monitoring even when switched off by keeping the system monitoring function active. Even in the OFF state, the system fault output remains operational, providing necessary alerts for any issues arising, such as system faults. This function is essential as it maintains awareness and safety levels on the ship, ensuring that critical faults do not go unnoticed and are addressed promptly to avert potential safety hazards .

The alarm delay times and watch interval times of the WAS40P system can be adjusted via parameterisation. Using specific keys, these times can be modified to meet operational needs. Delay times for alarms (optical and acoustic) can range from 1 to 180 seconds, allowing for customised responses based on alert requirements. Similarly, watch interval times can be set between 1 and 60 minutes, impacting how frequently checks are prompted for officer activity. These customizations ensure that the alarm settings can be tailored to specific navigation or operational conditions, enhancing safety and compliance with maritime regulations .

The selectable officers' function is significant within the WAS40P system as it allows for targeted communication and alerting. This function lets system operators specify which officers' cabins are selectable or can be called, allowing for efficient delegation and responsibility allocation. The ability to manage and toggle officer selection impacts operational readiness by ensuring that the correct personnel are notified and can respond to alarms or calls effectively. This enhances decision-making and quickens response times, which are crucial in maintaining the safety and efficiency of ship operation .
