Icebreaker (S21)

1. Take 10-15 minutes to fill out the survey here:

2. I’ll go over my answers.

3. In small groups, discuss your answers.
• Afterwards, we’ll go over some of this as a class.
• I’m going to call on a few people randomly.

Classes
• What we’ll do:
• Go over RW, myDalite, clear up questions from reading.
• Facilitate active learning activities:
• Conceptual Questions.

The basic idea
• Before the module:
• You learn some basics about the topic, get confused about some stuff, &
tell me about your confusion.

• During the module:

• In-class:
• We clear up that confusion together.
• Emphasis on active learning.
• At-home:
• You get individual practice with material (practice-problems).

• Question I should answer for you:

Why is the course set up this way?

Labs
• See guidelines on omnivox.

• Seven labs during the semester:

• Submit pre-lab to Omnivox dropbox evening before lab (1 per student).
• Arrive on time
• -10% if the intro has started
• Min. -20% if you’re more than 15 minutes late.
• Labs are done in groups of 2 (you can self-select).
• Submit report (1 per group) by the end of the period
• Min. -5% penalty if report is late.
Other availability
• Office Hours:
• On Omnivox / my door.
• OH are in-person, drop-in.

• Outside of OH
• Appointments: look at my schedule and suggest a time.
• Impromptu: If my door is open, you can ask me if I have time.
• Open-door policy: you can get help from another physicist if I ain’t around.

• MIO
• Good for admin questions & setting up appointments.
• Not great for physics questions, so I’ll suggest OH.
Marking Scheme

• Assigned work, quizzes: 15%

• RW & myDalite: 2% total We’ll go over these in detail during Class 3.
• Participation: 1 %
• In-class quizzes: 12 %
Marking Scheme
• Assigned work: 15 %
