Pulse Rate Lab 2024

The document outlines a practical exercise to determine how exercise affects pulse rate, detailing the aim, materials, method, results, discussion questions, conclusion, limitations, and precautions. It includes a table for recording pulse rates of students during different activities and provides a mark scheme for assessment. The experiment aims to analyze the relationship between exercise intensity and recovery time in relation to fitness levels.

PRACTICAL #: 15
TITLE: EXERCISE AND PULSE RATE
AIM: To determine how exercise affects the pulse rate.

MATERIALS: paper and pencil; timer

METHOD:
1. Rest by sitting down for 2 minutes. (No talking or activity).
2. At the end of two minutes rest find the pulse rate (number of pulse beats in 1 minute).
3. Next, stand for 2 minutes.
4. At the end of two minutes, find the new pulse rate for one minute.
5. Next jog around (or up and down stairs) for 2 minutes or perform 60 proper jumping jacks or
(which should take about 2 minutes).
6. At the end of two minutes, find the pulse rate every minute until it has returned to the normal
resting pulse rate.
7. Tabulate your results and draw a graph of the changes in pulse rate against time for one of the
fit students and one of the unfit students of your choice.

DISCUSSION
1. Define the term pulse and briefly outline what causes the pulse.
2. Define the term pulse rate.
3. State at which times during the experiment did the pulse rate increase, and suggest what changes
in the body required that the pulse rate increased.
4. List five factors that may affect a person’s pulse rate.
5. What happens to the pulse rate after exercise and explain the importance of this occurrence.
6. What is the correlation between recovery time pulse rate and a person’s level of fitness?
7. Which students (give letters only) were found to be most fit and include values as evidence?
8. Which students (give letters only) were found to be least fit and include values as evidence?
9. Based on recovery time pulse rates, which gender in the class was shown to be most fit?

CONCLUSION:

What effect does exercise have on pulse rate?
